![]() in person in the sanctuary and online Access the online service at https://www.facebook.com/CrievewoodUMC/ Pastor’s Pen For the month of May, our sermon series is called Imago Dei, which is Latin for “Image of God.” During this past Sunday’s worship service, we introduced this concept that underpins our understanding of what it means to be human. Over the next few weeks, we’ll explore the idea more and what implications it has for our life of faith. As part of the series our congregation will be weaving an altar cloth that we can use on the Communion Table in the sanctuary. We are grateful to Paige Dinger for building a loom for us to use in this process and who will finalize the cloth after the series is completed. But before then, we need your help! We are inviting everyone to participate in the weaving together of this new altar cloth by bringing in materials from home to add to the altar cloth. You could bring in strips of fabric, ribbon, yarn, tassels, even buttons or beads. The fabric can be any material and come from anything – old clothes, sheets, towels, a table runner, a pillowcase, an apron, a necktie, a blanket, home decorations, art supplies or projects, and more. Feel free to bring as much material as you want. It would be great if you can cut the fabric into long strips at home, but if you need for that to happen at church we will have scissors and helpers available. Our hope is to create something that simultaneously reminds us each of our own unique belovedness as well as the importance of being connected in community through Christ. We hope that the pieces you bring from home will have significance to you and that you’ll be able to identify them when you look at the finished altar cloth. We will also have some supplies and materials available at the church if you don’t have anything from home that you wish to bring (or if you forget). You are also welcome to write on your materials with a Sharpie something that would be meaningful to you – a scripture verse, a hymn, an important memory, names of loved ones, etc. The loom is set up in the narthex at Crievewood, and you are welcome to come by the church anytime to add your materials to the altar cloth. The church office is open M-F 8:30-4:30. The best time for most folks will likely be before, during, and after worship on Sunday mornings at 9:30. You could also come during Farmin’ in the Hall on Thursday evenings from 4:30 to 7:00, or if you need to arrange another time, please contact the church office at 615-832-2897. If you would rather mail your material to the church, our address is 451 Hogan Rd, Nashville TN 37220. We hope that everyone who is part of Crievewood will be able to participate and contribute to the creation of this altar cloth. I am excited to watch how this project develops and especially to see the finished altar cloth that will remind us that we are all connected to one another as beloved children of God. I do hope that you will participate in creating what promises to be a beautiful symbol for Crievewood for years to come. John Hill Centering Music: Love the Lord: Caleb Dinger, Piano Call to Worship: adapted from Psalm 146:Rev.John Hill Praise the Lord, O my soul. We will praise the Lord as long as we live. Happy are those whose hope is in the Lord their God Who made heaven and earth and executes justice for the oppressed. The Lord lifts up those who are bowed down. The Lord will reign forever. Hallelujah! Hymns: We Gather Together and Let There Be Light We Gather Together Verse 1 We gather together to ask the Lord’s blessing; he chastens and hastens his will to make known. The wicked oppressing now cease from distressing. Sing praises to his name; he forgets not His own. Verse 2 Beside us to guide us, our God with us joining, ordaining, maintaining his kingdom divine; so from the beginning the fight we were winning; thou, Lord, wast at our side, all glory be thine! Verse 3 We all do extol thee, thou leader triumphant, and pray that thou still our defender wilt be. Let thy congregation escape tribulation; thy name be ever praised! O Lord, make us free! Let There Be Light Let there be light, let there be understanding, let all nations gather, let them be face to face. Open our lips, open our minds to ponder, open the door of concord opening into grace. Perish the sword, perish the angry judgment, perish the bombs and hunger, perish the fight for gain. Hallow our love, hallow the deaths of martyrs, hallow their holy freedom, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come, your Spirit turn to language, your people speak together, your Spirit never fade. Let there be light, open our hearts to wonder, perish the way of terror, hallow the world God made. Opening Prayer: Rev. John Hill God of love and understanding, to you all hearts are open and all minds are known, and yet you care for each of us deeply. Give to us a share of that same openness that we may more closely resemble you and have greater compassion for one another, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Scripture Reading: Matthew 18:15-20: Rev. John Hill “If another member of the church sins against you, go and point out the fault when the two of you are alone. If the member listens to you, you have regained that one. But if you are not listened to, take one or two others along with you, so that every word may be confirmed by the evidence of two or three witnesses. If the member refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church; and if the offender refuses to listen even to the church, let such a one be to you as a Gentile and a tax collector. Truly I tell you, whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven. Again, truly I tell you, if two of you agree on earth about anything you ask, it will be done for you by my Father in heaven. We are aware that we have often allowed the shadow of hate to cloud our souls, hiding the light from our unseeking eyes. We have said unpleasant and hurtful things to our brothers and sisters when they failed to live up to our expectations. Grant that we might find that spark of love that ever burns within us, the love that you have shown to us even when we failed you. Fan the embers of that love until it roars again in flames of love, peace, and reconciliation. Forgive us our sins and help us to forgive those who have sinned against us. Lead us into new life through your Son Jesus Christ, who died for the sins of all. Amen. Silent Prayer Kyrie Words of Assurance Hear the Good News: Christ died for us while we were yet sinners. That proves God’s love toward us. In the name of Jesus Christ, you are forgiven. In the name of Jesus Christ, you are forgiven. Glory to God! Amen. The Great Thanksgiving: Book of Worship, pages 66-67: Rev. John Hill The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them up to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Almighty God, creator of heaven and earth. You formed us in your image and breathed into us the breath of life. When we turned away, and our love failed, your love remained steadfast. You delivered us from captivity, made covenant to be our sovereign God, brought us to a land flowing with milk and honey, and set before us the way of life. And so, with your people on earth and all the company of heaven we praise your name and join their unending hymn: Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. Holy are you, and blessed is your son Jesus Christ. By the baptism of his suffering, death, and resurrection you gave birth to your Church, delivered us from slavery to sin and death, and made with us a new covenant by water and the Spirit. By your great mercy we have been born anew to a living hope through the resurrection of your Son from the dead and to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading. Once we were no people, but now we are your people, declaring your wonderful deeds in Christ, who called us out of darkness into his marvelous light. When the Lord Jesus ascended, he promised to be with us always, in the power of your Word and Holy Spirit. On the night in which he gave himself up for us, he took bread, gave thanks to you, broke the bread, gave it to his disciples, and said: “Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” When supper was over, he took the cup, gave thanks to you, gave it to his disciples, and said: “Drink from this, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.” On the day you raised him from the dead he was recognized by his disciples in the breaking of the bread, and in the power of your Holy Spirit your Church has continued in the breaking of the bread and the sharing of the cup. And so, in remembrance of these your mighty acts in Jesus Christ, we offer ourselves in praise and thanksgiving as a holy and living sacrifice, in union with Christ’s offering for us, as we proclaim the mystery of faith. Christ has died; Christ is risen; Christ will come again. Pour out your Holy Spirit on us gathered here, and on these gifts of bread and the cup. Make them be for us the body and blood of Christ, that we may be for the world the body of Christ, redeemed by his blood. By your Spirit make us one with Christ, one with each other, and one in ministry to all the world, until Christ comes in final victory and we feast at his heavenly banquet. Through your Son Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit in your holy church, all honor and glory is yours, Almighty God, now and for ever. Amen. The Lord’s Prayer Holy Communion (following the sharing of the elements continue with this unison prayer taken from UMH, pg. 11:) Eternal God, we give you thanks for this holy mystery in which you have given yourself to us. Grant that we may go into the world in the strength of your Spirit, to give ourselves for others, in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen. Closing Hymn: Let There Be Peace on Earth Let There Be Peace on Earth Let there be peace on earth, and let it begin with me; let there be peace on earth, the peace that was meant to be. With God our creator, children all are we. Let us walk with each other in perfect harmony. Let peace begin with me; let this be the moment now. With every step I take, let this be my solemn vow: to take each moment and live each moment in peace eternally. Let there be peace on earth, and let it begin with me. Benediction: Rev. John Hill |

Chelsey Hedglin But Naomi said to her two daughters-in-law, “Go back each of you to your mother’s house. May the Lord deal kindly with you, as you have dealt with the dead and with me. The Lord grant that you may find security, each of you in the house of your husband.” Then she kissed them, and they wept aloud. They said to her, “No, we will return with you to your people.” But Naomi said, “Turn back, my daughters, why will you go with me? Do I still have sons in my womb that they may become your husbands? Turn back, my daughters, go your way, for I am too old to have a husband. Even if I thought there was hope for me, even if I should have a husband tonight and bear sons, would you then wait until they were grown? Would you then refrain from marrying? No, my daughters, it has been far more bitter for me than for you, because the hand of the Lord has turned against me.” Then they wept aloud again. Orpah kissed her mother-in-law, but Ruth clung to her. So she said, “See, your sister-in-law has gone back to her people and to her gods; return after your sister-in-law.” But Ruth said, “Do not press me to leave you or to turn back from following you! Where you go, I will go; Where you lodge, I will lodge; your people shall be my people, and your God my God. Where you die, I will die— there will I be buried. May the Lord do thus and so to me, and more as well, if even death parts me from you!” When Naomi saw that she was determined to go with her, she said no more to her. That proves God’s love toward us. In the name of Jesus Christ, you are forgiven. In the name of Jesus Christ, you are forgiven. Glory to God! Amen. Closing Hymn: Bless Be the Tie That BindsBless Be the Tie That Binds Verse 1 Blest be the tie that binds our hearts in Christian love; the fellowship of kindred minds is like to that above. Verse 2 Before our Father’s throne we pour our ardent prayers; our fears, our hopes, our aims are one, our comforts and our cares. Verse 3 We share each other’s woes, our mutual burdens bear; and often for each other flows the sympathizing tear. Verse 4 When we asunder part, it gives us inward pain; but we shall still be joined in heart, and hope to meet again. Benediction: Rev. John Hill ![]() |

![]() in person in the sanctuary and online Access the online service at https://www.facebook.com/CrievewoodUMC/Pastor’s Pen What a joyous day Easter Sunday was as we celebrated the Resurrection of Jesus Christ! It began early with our sunrise service in the Iris Garden. The sun began to shine over the hill and through the trees just as we were celebrating holy communion, and the birds joined us as we sang. It was a beautiful service. Then at 9:30 we worshiped in the sanctuary, decorated with banners, lilies, and white paraments. It was wonderful to have a large crowd for the first time since I’ve been at Crievewood. Between the two services and with drive up communion, we had over 150 people worship with us on Easter Sunday. Such a blessing! As society continues to make progress regarding the COVID pandemic and Crievewood takes small steps toward things returning to normal, the COVID Task Force has decided that our upstairs rooms can be used again for meetings, classes, and small groups. We have measured and mapped out each room and posted their maximum capacities that allow for proper social distancing of six feet. If you would like to reserve a room for a church activity, please contact the office. If your group is interested in meeting in person, this can now be an option, bearing in mind that masks and social distancing are still required. Currently our worship service is taking place at 9:30 am, which was formerly the Sunday School hour, so small groups will need to choose a different time (or even a different day) to meet. It also may be the case that the room in which your group has typically met is not large enough but another room would be, so you could reserve a different room. We will need to give priority scheduling to the established group in that room, so be sure to contact the church office to check availability and reserve a room. Another option for Sunday morning discipleship would be to meet all together in one of our larger spaces, such as the sanctuary or fellowship hall. If that option is appealing to you, please let Leigh Ann know. These are the capacities for each room: Conference Room: 10 people New Journey: 10 people Youth/UMW Library: 10 people Fellowship Forum: 20 people Wesley: 12 people Searchers: 12 people Young Spirits: 12 people Builders/Hilltop: 20 people Music Room: 20 people Narthex: 20 people Rev. Mission Notes Mission and Service Team Leader Needed The pandemic necessarily put a hold on many of Crievewood’s mission and service activities and ministries. As we begin to emerge from the pandemic, more and more opportunities to be the hands and feet of Christ in the world are again becoming available to our congregation. We are currently without a leader for the Mission and Service Team to spearhead and organize our efforts in this important part of our ministry together as a church. If you would be interested in serving in this capacity for the remainder of 2021, please reach out to John or Chelsey. Native American Sunday Native American Ministries Sunday, one of six UMC Special Sundays, will be observed on April 18th. When you give to this special offering, you equip seminary students who honor and celebrate Native American culture while providing hands on ministry and the gospel message to the communities they serve. Project Transformation For several years, Crievewood has worked with Project Transformation on their summer day camps that focus on literacy for children. Last summer, they were unable to hold the camps due to the pandemic, but this year they are hosting camps once again, although they will look a bit different. Instead of asking for volunteers to go to the camps and read with children in-person, they are asking for volunteers who would be willing to read with a child virtually over the internet. We do not currently have a point person to lead Crievewood’s volunteer efforts with Project Transformation. If you might be interested in serving in this capacity, please contact Rev. John Hill to find out more. ![]() The scholarship may be awarded to more than one recipient. If you have been awarded this scholarship in the past or if you have applied for this scholarship before, you may re-apply. You may receive the scholarship more than once. There is no age requirement. Any student who is a member of Crievewood United Methodist Church may apply for this scholarship. An application form may be obtained in the church office. Completed applications MUST be received in the church office no later than Sunday, May 23, 2021. This scholarship is available to part time as well as full time students. We are fortunate to have this scholarship available at our church. Please take advantage of this wonderful opportunity!! Please consult the scholarship form for further details. Scholarship Selection CommitteeOther Activities Tuesday Bible Study The Tuesday Bible Study has just begun the book of Genesis from the Immersion Bible Studies. In this four-week study, author, homiletics professor, and pastor J. Ellsworth Kalas approaches Genesis as a very personal and almost intimate book. Instead of viewing it as an academic study or as a puzzle to be solved, the author interprets Genesis in a very personal, up-close way. If you would like to join this study, please contact Chelsey Hedglin. Books are $11.50. The group meets in person in the Builders classroom at 9:30 a.m. each Tuesday with all COVID safety precautions in place. Letters to our Graduates It is a CUMC tradition for the congregation to write letters to our graduating high school seniors. This year, we have 4 wonderful seniors graduating, Austin David, Jacob Lee, Eric Leyers, and Tommy Stevens! Please write them letters wishing them well, sharing memories, or offering them words of wisdom. Letters are due to Chelsey by Friday, May 14th. Beersheba Women’s Retreat Beersheba Springs is offering their annual women’s retreat in person or virtual on April 30th to May 2nd. The retreat’s theme is Push Pause: Embracing the Spirit. Find information and registration information on this website: http://www.beershebaassembly.org/event/womens-retreat-may/ Project Transformation Summer Internships Project Transformation believes that relationships can transform communities and that young adults are a big part of that transformation bridging gaps between community and churches. If you are a college student and would like to make an impact in the Nashville area, Project Transformation is now taking applications for summer camp interns. The internship runs from May 31, 2021 to July 30, 2021 and pays $3,200. Your job would simply be to welcome folks as they enter the market, answer basic questions they might have, and provide disposable masks and hand sanitizer if anyone desires them.
