Thou my best thought, by day or by night,
waking or sleeping, thy presence my light.

Be thou my wisdom, and thou my true word;
I ever with thee and thou with me, Lord;
thou and thou only, first in my heart,
great God of heaven, my treasure thou art.

Verse 3
Great God of heaven, my victory won,
may I reach heaven’s joys, O bright heaven’s Sun!
Heart of my own heart, whatever befall
still be my vision, O Ruler of all.

Open the Eyes of My Heart

Open the eyes of my heart, Lord,
open the eyes of my heart;

To see you high and lifted up,
shining in the light of your glory.
Pour out your power and love
as we sing.  Holy, holy, holy.

I want to see you,
I want to see you.

Open the eyes of my heart, Lord,
open the eyes of my heart;

To see you high and lifted up,
shining in the light of your glory.

 Opening Prayer:  Chelsey Hedglin
God of love and understanding, to you all hearts are open and all minds are known, and yet you care for each of us deeply. Give to us a share of that same openness that we may more closely resemble you and have greater compassion for one another, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Scripture Reading:  John 20:19-25:  Rev. Chelsey Hedglin
When it was evening on that day, the first day of the week, and the doors of the house where the disciples had met were locked for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you.” After he said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord. Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you.” When he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.” But Thomas (who was called the Twin), one of the twelve, was not with them when Jesus came. So the other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord.” But he said to them, “Unless I see the mark of the nails in his hands, and put my finger in the mark of the nails and my hand in his side, I will not believe.”

Sermon: Sacred Conversations:  I Will Not Believe: Rev. John Hill

Offertory Anthem: You Say
Hailee Hunt-Hawkins, Vocalist; Caleb Dinger, InstrumentalistYou Say
Verse 1
I keep fighting voices in my mind
That say I’m not enough
Every single lie that tells me
I will never measure up

Verse 2
Am I more than just the sum of
Every high and every low
Remind me once again just who I am
Because I need to know

Chorus
You say I am loved when I can’t feel a thing
You say I am strong when I think I am weak
You say I am held when I am falling short
And when I don’t belong oh You say I am Yours
And I believe
I believe
What You say of me
I believe

Verse 3
The only thing that matters now
Is everything You think of me
In You I find my worth
In You I find my identity

Repeat Chorus

Bridge
Taking all I have and now I’m laying it at Your feet
You’ll have every failure God
You’ll have every victory

Repeat Chorus
Prayer of Confession: from the Book of Worship, page 481: Rev. John Hill
Almighty and merciful God, we know that when we offend another, we offend you.  We are aware that we have often allowed the shadow of hate to cloud our souls, hiding the light from our unseeking eyes.  We have said unpleasant and hurtful things to our brothers and sisters when they failed to live up to our expectations.  Grant that we might find that spark of love that ever burns within us, the love that you have shown to us even when we failed you.  Fan the embers of that love until it roars again in flames of love, peace, and reconciliation.  Forgive us our sins and help us to forgive those who have sinned against us.  Lead us into new life through your Son Jesus Christ, who died for the sins of all.  Amen.

Silent Prayer

Kyrie

Words of Assurance
Hear the Good News: Christ died for us while we were yet sinners. That
proves God’s love toward us. In the name of Jesus Christ, you are forgiven.
In the name of Jesus Christ, you are forgiven.
Glory to God! Amen.
Closing Hymn: Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus
 Turn Your Eyes upon Jesus
Turn your eyes upon Jesus,
look full in His wonderful face,
and the things of earth will grow strangely dim
in the light of His glory and grace.
   Benediction:  Rev. John Hill

Where’s thy victory, boasting grave? Alleluia!

Following our exalted Head, Alleluia!

King of glory, soul of bliss, Alleluia!
Everlasting life is this, Alleluia!
Thee to know, thy power to prove, Alleluia!
Thus to sing, and thus to love, Alleluia!

In Christ Alone
Verse 1
In Christ alone my hope is found
He is my light my strength my song
This Cornerstone this solid Ground
Firm through the fiercest drought and storm
What heights of love what depths of peace
When fears are stilled when strivings cease
My Comforter my All in All
Here in the love of Christ I stand.

Verse 2
In Christ alone who took on flesh
Fullness of God in helpless babe
This gift of love and righteousness
Scorned by the ones He came to save
Till on that cross as Jesus died
The lamb of God was crucified
For every sin on Him was laid
Here in the death of Christ I live

Verse 3
There in the ground His body lay
Light of the world by darkness slain
Then bursting forth in glorious Day
Up from the grave He rose again
And as He stands in victory
Sin’s curse has lost its grip on me
For I am His and He is mine
Bought with the precious blood of Christ

Verse 4
No guilt in life no fear in death
This is the power of Christ in me
From life’s first cry to final breath
Jesus commands my destiny
No power of hell no scheme or plan
Can ever pluck me from His hand
Till He returns or calls me home
Here in the power of Christ I’ll stand

Opening Prayer:  UMH #320:Rev. Chelsey Hedglin
Almighty God, through Jesus Christ you overcame death and opened to us the gate of everlasting life.  Grant that we, who celebrate the day of our Lord’s resurrection, may, by the renewing of your Spirit arise from the death of sin to the life of righteousness; through Jesus Christ our Lord.  Amen.

Scripture Reading:  John 20:1-18:  Rev. Chelsey HedglinEarly on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene came to the tomb and saw that the stone had been removed from the tomb. So she ran and went to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one whom Jesus loved, and said to them, “They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid him.” Then Peter and the other disciple set out and went toward the tomb. The two were running together, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first. He bent down to look in and saw the linen wrappings lying there, but he did not go in. Then Simon Peter came, following him, and went into the tomb. He saw the linen wrappings lying there, and the cloth that had been on Jesus’ head, not lying with the linen wrappings but rolled up in a place by itself. Then the other disciple, who reached the tomb first, also went in, and he saw and believed; for as yet they did not understand the scripture, that he must rise from the dead. Then the disciples returned to their homes. But Mary stood weeping outside the tomb. As she wept, she bent over to look into the tomb; and she saw two angels in white, sitting where the body of Jesus had been lying, one at the head and the other at the feet. They said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping?” She said to them, “They have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid him.” When she had said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, but she did not know that it was Jesus. Jesus said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping? Whom are you looking for?” Supposing him to be the gardener, she said to him, “Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have laid him, and I will take him away.” Jesus said to her, “Mary!” She turned and said to him in Hebrew, “Rabbouni!” (which means Teacher). Jesus said to her, “Do not hold on to me, because I have not yet ascended to the Father. But go to my brothers and say to them, ‘I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.’” Mary Magdalene went and announced to the disciples, “I have seen the Lord”; and she told them that he had said these things to her.
Sermon: The Certainty of the Resurrection: Rev. John Hill

Instrumental Reflection: Because He Lives: Caleb Dinger, Piano

Pastoral Prayer: Rev. Chelsey Hedglin

Invitation to Offer Tithes and Gifts: Rev. Chelsey Hedglin

Offertory Anthem: See What a Morning:
Hailee Hunt-Hawkins, Vocalist; Caleb Dinger, InstrumentalistSee What a Morning (Resurrection Hymn)
Verse 1
See what a morning gloriously bright
With the dawning of hope in Jerusalem
Folded the grave-clothes tomb filled with light
As the angels announce Christ is risen
See God’s salvation plan wrought in love
Borne in pain paid in sacrifice
Fulfilled in Christ the Man
For He lives Christ is risen from the dead

Verse 2
See Mary weeping where is He laid
As in sorrow she turns from the empty tomb
Hears a voice speaking calling her name
It’s the Master the Lord raised to life again
The voice that spans the years
Speaking life stirring hope bringing peace to us
Will sound till He appears
For He lives Christ is risen from the dead

 Verse 3
One with the Father Ancient of Days
Through the Spirit who clothes faith with certainty
Honour and blessing glory and praise
To the King crowned with pow’r and authority
And we are raised with Him
Death is dead love has won Christ has conquered
And we shall reign with Him
For He lives Christ is risen from the dead
Invitation to the Table:  Rev. John HillConfession and Pardon: Rev. John HillMerciful God, we confess that we have not loved you with our whole heart. We have failed to be an obedient church. We have not done your will, we have broken your law, we have rebelled against your love, we have not loved our neighbors, and we have not heard the cry of the needy. Forgive us, we pray. Free us for joyful obedience, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. All pray in silence.

The Great Thanksgiving:
Book of Worship, pages 66-67:
Rev. John Hill and Rev. Chelsey Hedglin

The Lord be with you.
And also with you.
Lift up your hearts.
We lift them up to the Lord.
Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
It is right to give our thanks and praise.

It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you,  Almighty God, creator of heaven and earth. You formed us in your image and breathed into us the breath of life.  When we turned away, and our love failed, your love remained steadfast.  You delivered us from captivity, made covenant to be our sovereign God, brought us to a land flowing with mild and honey, and set before us the way of life.

And so, with your people on earth and all the company of heaven we praise your name and join their unending hymn:
Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might,
heaven and earth are full of your glory.
Hosanna in the highest.
Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord.
Hosanna in the highest.

Holy are you, and blessed is your son Jesus Christ.  By the baptism of his suffering, death, and resurrection you gave birth to your Church, delivered us from slavery to sin and death, and made with us a new covenant by water and the Spirit.  By your great mercy we have been born anew to a living hope through the resurrection of your Son from the dead and to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading.  Once we were no people, but now we are your people, declaring your wonderful deeds in Christ, who called us out of darkness into his marvelous light.  When the Lord Jesus ascended, he promised to be with us always, in the power of your Word and Holy Spirit.

On the night in which he gave himself up for us, he took bread, gave thanks to you, broke the bread, gave it to his disciples, and said: “Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.”

When supper was over, he took the cup, gave thanks to you, gave it to his disciples, and said: “Drink from this, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.”
On the day you raised him from the dead he was recognized by his disciples in the breaking of the bread, and in the power of your Holy Spirit your Church has continued in the breaking of the bread and the sharing of the cup.
And so, in remembrance of these your mighty acts in Jesus Christ, we offer ourselves in praise and thanksgiving as a holy and living sacrifice, in union with Christ’s offering for us, as we proclaim the mystery of faith.
Christ has died; Christ is risen; Christ will come again.

Pour out your Holy Spirit on us gathered here, and on these gifts of bread and the cup. Make them be for us the body and blood of Christ, that we may be for the world the body of Christ, redeemed by his blood.

By your Spirit make us one with Christ, one with each other, and one in ministry to all the world, until Christ comes in final victory and we feast at his heavenly banquet.

Through your Son Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit in your holy church, all honor and glory is yours, Almighty God, now and for ever.
Amen.

Invitation to Holy Communion:  Rev. Chelsey HedglinConfession and Pardon: Rev. Chelsey Hedglin
Merciful God, we confess that we have not loved you with our whole heart.

Kyrie (Dvorak)

Hear the Good News: Christ died for us while we were yet sinners. That
proves God’s love toward us. In the name of Jesus Christ, you are forgiven.
In the name of Jesus Christ, you are forgiven.
Glory to God! Amen.

Greeting: John Hill
God is light, in whom there is no darkness at all.
Jesus Christ is the light of the world.
And this is the judgment, that the light has come into the world,
and we loved darkness rather than light.

Hymn: What Wondrous Love Is This What Wondrous Love Is This
Verse 1
What wondrous love is this, O my soul, O my soul,
what wondrous love is this, O my soul!
What wondrous love is this that caused the Lord of bliss
to bear the dreadful curse for my soul, for my soul,
to bear the dreadful curse for my soul.Verse 2
What wondrous love is this, O my soul, O my soul,
what wondrous love is this, O my soul!
What wondrous love is this, that caused the Lord of life
to lay aside his crown for my soul, for my soul,
to lay aside his crown for my soul.Verse 3
To God and to the Lamb I will sing, I will sing,
to God and to the Lamb I will sing;
to God and to the Lamb who is the great I AM,
while millions join the theme, I will sing, I will sing,
while millions join the theme, I will sing.Verse 4
And when from death I’m free, I’ll sing on, I’ll sing on,
and when from death I’m free, I’ll sing on;
and when from death I’m free, I’ll sing and joyful be,
and through eternity I’ll sing on, I’ll sing on,
and through eternity I’ll sing on. Opening Prayer: UMH #284: Chelsey Hedglin
Almighty God, graciously behold this your family, for whom our Lord Jesus Christ was willing to be betrayed into the hands of sinners, and to suffer death upon the cross; who now lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, One God, for ever and ever.
Amen.

The Passion of the Christ
(JOHN 18:1–19:42)

Reading 1:  Jim Fuller
Jesus… went forth with his disciples across the Kidron valley, where there was a garden, which he and his disciples entered.
Now Judas, who betrayed him, also knew the place; for Jesus often met there with his disciples.
So Judas, procuring a band of soldiers and some officers from the chief priests and the Pharisees, went there with lanterns and torches and weapons.
Then Jesus, knowing all that was to befall him, came forward and said to them, “Whom do you seek?”
They answered him, “Jesus of Nazareth.”
Jesus said to them, “I am he.”
Judas, who betrayed him, was standing with them.
When he said to them, “I am he,” they drew back and fell to the ground.
Again he asked them, “Whom do you seek?”
And they said, “Jesus of Nazareth.”
Jesus answered, “I told you that I am he; so, if you seek me, let these men go.”
This was to fulfill the word which he had spoken, “I did not lose a single one of those whom you gave me.”
Then Simon Peter, having a sword, drew it and struck the high priest’s slave and cut off his right ear. The slave’s name was Malchus.
Jesus said to Peter, “Put your sword into its sheath; shall I not drink the cup which the Father has given me?”

The Reader Extinguishes the First Candle.

Reading 2:  Kathryn Buffler
So the band of soldiers and their captain and the officers of the Judean authorities seized Jesus and bound him.
First they led him to Annas; for he was the father–in–law of Caiaphas, who was high priest that year.
It was Caiaphas who had given counsel to the religious authorities that it was expedient that one man should die for the people.

The Second Candle Is Extinguished.

Reading 3:  Tracey Lee
Simon Peter followed Jesus, and so did another disciple.
As this disciple was known to the high priest, he entered the court of the high priest along with Jesus, while Peter stood outside at the door.
So the other disciple, who was known to the high priest, went out and spoke to the woman who guarded the gate, and brought Peter in.
The woman who guarded the gate said to Peter, “Are not you also one of this man’s disciples?”
He said, “I am not.”
Now the servants and officers had made a charcoal fire, because it was cold, and they were standing and warming themselves;
Peter also was with them, standing and warming himself.

The Third Candle Is Extinguished.

Reading 4:  Susan Cortner
The high priest then questioned Jesus about his disciples and his teaching.
Jesus answered him, “I have spoken openly to the world;
I have always taught in synagogues and in the temple, where all Jewish people come together;
I have said nothing secretly. Why do you ask me?
Ask those who have heard me, what I said to them; they know what I said.”
When he had said this, one of the officers standing by struck Jesus with his hand, saying, “Is that how you answer the high priest?”
Jesus answered him, “If I have spoken wrongly, bear witness to the wrong; but if I have spoken rightly, why do you strike me?”
Annas then sent him bound to Caiaphas the high priest.

The Fourth Candle Is Extinguished.

Reading 5:  Terri Kannon
Now Simon Peter was standing and warming himself.
They said to him, “Are not you also one of his disciples?”
He denied it and said, “I am not.”
One of the servants of the high priest, a kinsman of the man whose ear Peter had cut off, asked, “Did I not see you in the garden with him?”
Peter again denied it; and at once the cock crowed.

The Fifth Candle Is Extinguished.

Reading 6:  Tandy Taylor
Then they led Jesus from the house of Caiaphas to Pilate’s headquarters.
It was early.
They themselves did not enter the headquarters, so that they might not be defiled, but might eat the Passover.
So Pilate went out to them and said, “What accusation do you bring against this man?”
They answered him, “If this man were not an evildoer, we would not have handed him over.”
Pilate said to them, “Take him yourselves and judge him by your own law.”
The religious authorities said to him, “It is not lawful for us to put any man to death.”
This was to fulfill the word which Jesus had spoken to show by what death he was to die.

The Sixth Candle Is Extinguished.

Reading 7:  Kathryn Buffler
Pilate entered the headquarters again and called Jesus, and said to him, “Are you the King of the Jews?”
Jesus answered, “Do you say this of your own accord, or did others say it to you about me?”
Pilate answered, “Am I a Jew? Your own nation and the chief priests have handed you over to me; what have you done?”
Jesus answered, “My kingship is not of this world; if my kingship were of this world, my servants would fight, that I might not be handed over to the religious authorities; but my kingship is not from the world.”
Pilate said to him, “So you are a king?”
Jesus answered, “You say that I am a king.
For this I was born, and for this I have come into the world, to bear witness to the truth.
Every one who is of the truth hears my voice.”
Pilate said to him, “What is truth?”

The Seventh Candle Is Extinguished.

Reading 8:  Tracey Lee
After Pilate had said this, he went to the religious authorities again, and told them, “I find no crime in him.
But you have a custom that I should release one man for you at the Passover;
will you have me release for you the King of the Jews?”
They cried out again, “Not this man, but Barabbas!”
Now Barabbas was a robber.

The Eighth Candle Is Extinguished.

Reading 9:  Susan Cortner
Then Pilate took Jesus and scourged him.
And the soldiers plaited a crown of thorns, and put it on his head, and arrayed him in a purple robe;
they came up to him, saying, “Hail, King of the Jews!” and struck him with their hands.
Pilate went out again, and said to them, “See, I am bringing him out to you, that you may know that I find no crime in him.”
So Jesus came out, wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe.
Pilate said to them, “Behold the man!”
When the chief priests and the officers saw him, they cried out, “Crucify him, crucify him!”
Pilate said to them, “Take him yourselves and crucify him, for I find no crime in him.”
The religious authorities answered him,
“We have a law, and by that law he ought to die, because he has made himself the Son of God.”
When Pilate heard these words, he was the more afraid; he entered the headquarters again and said to Jesus, “Where are you from?”
But Jesus gave no answer.
Pilate therefore said to him, “You will not speak to me? Do you not know that I have power to release you, and power to crucify you?”
Jesus answered him, “You would have no power over me unless it had been given you from above; therefore he who delivered me to you has the greater sin.”

The Ninth Candle Is Extinguished.

Hymn:  O Sacred Head, Now Wounded (vs 1)
 O Sacred Head, Now Wounded
Verse 1
O sacred Head, now wounded,
with grief and shame weighed down,
now scornfully surrounded
with thorns, thine only crown;
how pale thou art with anguish,
with sore abuse and scorn!
How does that visage languish
which once was bright as morn!
Reading 10:  Terri Kannon
Upon this Pilate sought to release him, but the religious authorities cried out,
“If you release this man, you are not Caesar’s friend; every one who makes himself a king sets himself against Caesar.”
When Pilate heard these words, he brought Jesus out and sat down on the judgment seat at a place called The Pavement, and in Hebrew, Gab’ · ba· tha .
Now it was the day of Preparation of the Passover; it was about the sixth hour.
He said to the religious authorities, “Behold your King!”
They cried out, “Away with him, away with him, crucify him!”
Pilate said to them, “Shall I crucify your King?”
The chief priests answered, “We have no king but Caesar.”
They handed him over to them to be crucified.

The Tenth Candle Is Extinguished.

Reading 11:  Tandy Taylor
So they took Jesus, and he went out, bearing his own cross, to the place called the place of a skull, which is called in Hebrew, Gol’ ·go·tha .
There they crucified him, and with him two others, one on either side, and Jesus between them.
Pilate also wrote a title and put it on the cross; it read, “Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews.”
Many of the Judeans read this title, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city; and it was written in Hebrew, in Latin, and in Greek.
The Jewish chief priests then said to Pilate, “Do not write, ‘The King of the Jews,’ but, ‘This man said, I am King of the Jews.'”
Pilate answered, “What I have written I have written.”

The Eleventh Candle Is Extinguished.

Hymn:  Were You There (vs 1)Were You There (vs 1)
Were you there when they crucified my Lord?
Were you there when they crucified my Lord?
Oh, sometimes it causes me to tremble, tremble, tremble.
Were you there when they crucified my Lord?
 Reading 12:  Kathryn Buffler
When the soldiers had crucified Jesus they took his garments and made four parts, one for each soldier; also his tunic.
But the tunic was without seam, woven from top to bottom; so they said to one another,  “Let us not tear it, but cast lots for it to see whose it shall be.”
This was to fulfill the scripture,
“They parted my garments among them, and for my clothing they cast lots.”

The Twelfth Candle Is Extinguished.

Hymn:  Were You There (vs 2)
Were You There (vs 2)Were you there when they nailed him to the tree?
Were you there when they nailed him to the tree?
Oh, sometimes it causes me to tremble, tremble, tremble.
Were you there when they nailed him to the tree?
 Reading 13:  Tracey Lee
So the soldiers did this.
But standing by the cross of Jesus were his mother, and his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene.
When Jesus saw his mother, and the disciple whom he loved standing near, he said to his mother, “Woman, behold, your son!”
Then he said to the disciple, “Behold, your mother!”
And from that hour the disciple took her to his own home.

The Thirteenth Candle Is Extinguished. Hymn:  Were You There (vs. 3)Were You There (vs. 3)
Were you there when they pierced him in the side?
Were you there when they pierced him in the side?
Oh, sometimes it causes me to tremble, tremble, tremble.
Were you there when they pierced him in the side?
 Reading 14:  Susan Cortner
After this Jesus, knowing that all was now finished, said (to fulfill the scripture), “I thirst.”
A bowl full of vinegar stood there; so they put a sponge full of the vinegar on hyssop and held it to his mouth.
When Jesus had received the vinegar, he said, “It is finished”; and he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.

The Fourteenth Candle Is Extinguished.

Hymn:  Were You There (vs. 4)Were You There (vs. 4)
Were you there when the sun refused to shine?
Were you there when the sun refused to shine?
Oh, sometimes it causes me to tremble, tremble, tremble.
Were you there when the sun refused to shine?
Reading 15:  Terri Kannon
“Since it was the day of Preparation, in order to prevent the bodies from remaining on the cross on the sabbath (for that sabbath was a high day),
the religious authorities asked Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away.
So the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first, and of the other who had been crucified with him;
but when they came to Jesus and saw that he was already dead, they did not break his legs.
But one of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear, and at once there came out blood and water.
He who saw it has borne witness—his testimony is true, and he knows that he tells the truth—that you also may believe.
For these things took place that the scripture might be fulfilled, “Not a bone of him shall be broken.”
And again another scripture says, “They shall look on him whom they have pierced.

The Christ Candle Is Extinguished.

Hymn:  Were You There (vs. 5)Were You There (vs. 5)
Were you there when they laid him in the tomb?
Were you there when they laid him in the tomb?
Oh, sometimes it causes me to tremble, tremble, tremble.
Were you there when they laid him in the tomb?
Reading 16:  Jim Fuller
After this Joseph of Arimathea, who was a disciple of Jesus, but secretly, for fear of the religious authorities,
asked Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus, and Pilate gave him leave.
So he came and took away his body.
Nicodemus also, who had at first come to him by night, came bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about a hundred pounds’ weight.
They took the body of Jesus, and bound it in linen cloths with the spices, as is the burial custom of the Jews.
Now in the place where he was crucified there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb where no one had ever been laid.
So because of the Jewish day of Preparation, as the tomb was close at hand, they laid Jesus there.

Please Observe a Moment of Silence.

Hymn: When I Survey the Wondrous Cross
When I Survey the Wondrous CrossVerse 1
When I survey the wondrous cross
on which the Prince of glory died,
my richest gain I count but loss,
and pour contempt on all my pride.

Verse 2
Forbid it, Lord, that I should boast,
save in the death of Christ, my God;
all the vain things that charm me most,
I sacrifice them to His blood.

Verse 3
See, from his head, his hands, his feet,
sorrow and love flow mingled down.
Did e’er such love and sorrow meet,
or thorns compose so rich a crown?

Verse 4
Were the whole realm of nature mine,
that were an offering far too small;
love so amazing, so divine,
demands my soul, my life, my all.
Dismissal:  Rev. John Hill         Go in peace. May Jesus Christ, who for our sake became obedient unto death, even death on a cross, keep you and strengthen you this night and for ever. Amen.

Going Forth All Should Depart in Silence.

“The waters swelled and increased greatly on the earth.” (Genesis 7:18a) Our weather this past weekend may not have reached biblical proportions like in the story of Noah quoted here, but it was still pretty intense. The normally serene and idyllic creek that separates the church from the parsonage rose above its banks on Saturday night, filled my backyard, crossed the driveway, and came right up to the parsonage. Water got into the garage and basement, but didn’t do any permanent damage. I was able to scramble and move all of our stuff out of harm’s way. I know that there are many across our community that were not nearly as fortunate – many whose homes were severely damaged and some who even lost their lives. My heart goes out to them all, as I know yours does as well.

Our church and community are already mobilizing to help with recovery efforts. I’m especially grateful to Bill Tucker for his help in cleaning up the parsonage on Sunday. We sent a small team to the home of some church members on Monday to help them clean up. If you need assistance of any kind, please reach out to the church and/or call the Tennessee Flood Cleanup Hotline at 833-904-1085. If you are looking to volunteer, please let us know or simply sign up for a project through Hands on Nashville. It is always amazing to see the generous spirit of people in the aftermath of something like this. Be on the lookout for Christ at work in and through the service of others.

This is also Holy Week, and I hope you’ll make plans to join us – in-person or virtually – for our various worship services this week. We’ll be in the sanctuary and online at 6:30 pm for both Maundy Thursday and Good Friday. On Easter Sunday, we’ll have a Sunrise Service at the Iris Garden at 6:30 am (bring your own chair) and in the sanctuary and online at 9:30 am. This year, perhaps more than any other, because we are beginning to catch a glimpse of life on the other side of the pandemic feels like a weight is being lifted as Lent comes to an end and we anticipate resurrection and new life in Easter. May we all experience a deep sense of hope as we move into the next season of life.
Rev. John HillThe Maundy Thursday service will include optional, no-touch foot- or hand-washing stations and will also include Holy Communion using the pre-packaged elements.
Access the online service at https://www.facebook.com/CrievewoodUMC/Available During Holy Week
 Stations of the Cross
All are invited to come spend some time at our Lenten prayer stations 8:30am – 4:30pm during Holy Week. The stations are set up in the main upstairs hallway. Each of the stations include scripture, reflection questions, a creative response, and a prayer all based in our Lenten theme of “embracing the uncertain.” You will likely need 30 minutes to an hour to complete all six stations. Stations of the Cross with words and images are also placed on the wall near the stations. We hope that you will be able to spend some sacred and meaningful time at these prayer stations during Holy Week.

Lenten Devotionals
The Crievewood staff has written devotionals for you to use at home during Holy Week.  Paper copies are available in the narthex; access the online version below.Lenten DevotionalThe CUMC Good Friday service will be a tenebrae service, also known as a service of darkness.  Access the online service at https://www.facebook.com/CrievewoodUMC/

St. Mary of Bethany is offering a come-and-go Good Friday service focused on the Seven Last Words of Christ from noon to 3:00 pm in the sanctuary to which Crievewood is invited.

For all in-person services, please wear a mask and maintain a social distance of six feet from those not in your household. Mission Notes
 TP Sunday
TP Sunday will be paused in April, but will resume again on May 2nd.  Thank you for your continuing support of this outreach to the homeless of Nashville.

Crievewood Serves:
South End UMC Food Program

The South End Food Project was originally created to supplement the food budget of families with school children who lost the school food breakfast/lunch program during summer vacation.  The pandemic caused a more prolonged need, and South End continued the food program for an extended time period to supply community families with adequate nutrition.  We thank all the volunteers who pitched in to make this happen. However, the project will now take a short hiatus and begin again in June with its traditional summer food program.

Easter Lawn Cross
Continuing a tradition that we started last year, we will create an outline of a cross on the Hogan Road hillside Easter weekend, and all are invited to stop by and fill it with flowers. The outline will be set up on Saturday, April 3rd at noon, so you are welcome to bring your flowers on Saturday or Sunday. Drive back around on Monday to see the beautiful results that the whole community can enjoy!Thank You
Dear Crievewood Family,

Thank you so much for the tremendous support during Dad’s extended illness and transition to eternal life.  Our church family has been central in our lives. Crievewood is so important to us as we have made so many lifelong friends here.  This church family has supported us through the years in good times and hard times.  Your calls, cards, texts, food and outpouring of love are so appreciated.  And your prayers sustain us daily. Mom and Dad loved this church and their church family so!  We miss them terribly but are rejoicing that they are reunited!
