We have joined our spirit With the Spirit of God. We are one in the bond of loveOpening Prayer: Mark Hattan God of all wisdom, you have revealed yourself to us through the Bible and have promised that all scripture is inspired by you – even the parts we ignore or overlook. Open our hearts and minds to the instruction and encouragement from these Little Letters that we may keep ourselves in the love of God and walk in the Truth. Amen. Scripture Reading: 3 John 1-15: Mark Hattan The elder to the beloved Gaius, whom I love in truth. Beloved, I pray that all may go well with you and that you may be in good health, just as it is well with your soul. I was overjoyed when some of the friends arrived and testified to your faithfulness to the truth, namely, how you walk in the truth. I have no greater joy than this, to hear that my children are walking in the truth. Beloved, you do faithfully whatever you do for the friends, even though they are strangers to you; they have testified to your love before the church. You will do well to send them on in a manner worthy of God; for they began their journey for the sake of Christ, accepting no support from non-believers. Therefore we ought to support such people, so that we may become co-workers with the truth. I have written something to the church; but Diotrephes, who likes to put himself first, does not acknowledge our authority. So if I come, I will call attention to what he is doing in spreading false charges against us. And not content with those charges, he refuses to welcome the friends, and even prevents those who want to do so and expels them from the church. Beloved, do not imitate what is evil but imitate what is good. Whoever does good is from God; whoever does evil has not seen God. Everyone has testified favorably about Demetrius, and so has the truth itself. We also testify for him, and you know that our testimony is true. I have much to write to you, but I would rather not write with pen and ink; instead I hope to see you soon, and we will talk together face to face. Peace to you. The friends send you their greetings. Greet the friends there, each by name.Sermon: Little Letters – 3 John: Rev. John Hill Instrumental Reflection: I Love You Lord: Caleb Dinger, pianist Pastoral Prayer: Rev. John Hill God of love, you have ordered the world and invited us to share in its goodness and beauty as a beloved community, but our pride, greed, selfishness, and apathy have kept us from flourishing. We have not followed your precepts. We have robbed others of their dignity and seen them as means to an end. We have put ourselves first and hurt one another. And we have abandoned you and your ways. These are the ones we should serve These are the ones we should love, All these are neighbors to us and you. Jesu, Jesu Fill us with your love, Show us how to serve the neighbors we have from you. Loving puts us on our knees, Serving as though we are slaves, This is the way we should live with you. Jesu, Jesu Fill us with your love, Show us how to serve the neighbors we have from you. May Jesus Christ extend to us a hand of love and grace. Come, let us worship our Redeemer. May the Holy Spirit join us in this place and inspire us. Come, let us worship our Sustainer. Hymns: Help Us Accept Each Other and Lord God, Your Love Has Called Us HereHelp Us Accept Each Other Verse 1 Help us accept each other as Christ accepted us; teach us as sister, brother, each person to embrace. Be present, Lord, among us, and bring us to believe we are ourselves accepted and meant to love and live. Verse 2 Teach us, O Lord, your lessons, as in our daily life we struggle to be human and search for hope and faith. Teach us to care for people, for all, not just for some, to love them as we find them, or as they may become. Verse 3 Let your acceptance change us, so that we may be moved in living situations to do the truth in love; to practice your acceptance, until we know by heart the table of forgiveness and laughter’s healing art. Verse 4 Lord, for today’s encounters with all who are in need, who hunger for acceptance, for righteousness and bread, we need new eyes for seeing, new hands for holding on; renew us with your Spirit; Lord, free us, make us one! Lord God, Your Love Has Called Us Here Verse 1 Lord God, your love has called us here, as we, by love, for love were made; your living likeness still we bear, though marred, dishonored, disobeyed; we come, with all our heart and mind, your call to hear, your love to find. Verse 2 We come with self-inflicted pains of broken trust and chosen wrong, half-free, half-bound by inner chains, by social forces swept along, by powers and systems close confined, yet seeking hope for human kind. Verse 3 Lord God, in Christ you call our name, then receive us as your own; not through some merit, right, or claim, but by your gracious love alone; we strain to glimpse your mercy seat, and find you kneeling at our feet. Verse 4 Then take the towel, and break the bread, and humble us, and call us friends; suffer and serve till all are fed, and show how grandly love intends to work till all creation sings, to fill all worlds, to crown all things. Verse 5 Lord God, in Christ you set us free your life to live, your joy to share; give us your Spirit’s liberty to turn from guilt and dull despair, and offer all that faith can do, while love is making all things new. Opening Prayer: Rev. John Hill God of all wisdom, you have revealed yourself to us through the Bible and have promised that all scripture is inspired by you – even the parts we ignore or overlook. Open our hearts and minds to the instruction and encouragement from these Little Letters that we may keep ourselves in the love of God and walk in the Truth. Amen. Scripture Reading: Philemon 1:1-25: Rev. John Hill Paul, a prisoner of Christ Jesus, and Timothy our brother, To Philemon our dear friend and co-worker, to Apphia our sister, to Archippus our fellow soldier, and to the church in your house: Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. When I remember you in my prayers, I always thank my God because I hear of your love for all the saints and your faith toward the Lord Jesus. I pray that the sharing of your faith may become effective when you perceive all the good that we may do for Christ. I have indeed received much joy and encouragement from your love, because the hearts of the saints have been refreshed through you, my brother. For this reason, though I am bold enough in Christ to command you to do your duty, yet I would rather appeal to you on the basis of love—and I, Paul, do this as an old man, and now also as a prisoner of Christ Jesus. I am appealing to you for my child, Onesimus, whose father I have become during my imprisonment. Formerly he was useless to you, but now he is indeed useful both to you and to me. I am sending him, that is, my own heart, back to you. I wanted to keep him with me, so that he might be of service to me in your place during my imprisonment for the gospel; but I preferred to do nothing without your consent, in order that your good deed might be voluntary and not something forced. Perhaps this is the reason he was separated from you for a while, so that you might have him back forever, no longer as a slave but more than a slave, a beloved brother—especially to me but how much more to you, both in the flesh and in the Lord. So if you consider me your partner, welcome him as you would welcome me. If he has wronged you in any way, or owes you anything, charge that to my account. I, Paul, am writing this with my own hand: I will repay it. I say nothing about your owing me even your own self. Yes, brother, let me have this benefit from you in the Lord! Refresh my heart in Christ. Confident of your obedience, I am writing to you, knowing that you will do even more than I say. One thing more—prepare a guest room for me, for I am hoping through your prayers to be restored to you. Epaphras, my fellow prisoner in Christ Jesus, sends greetings to you, and so do Mark, Aristarchus, Demas, and Luke, my fellow workers. The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit. Recognition of Jan Bassett Benediction: Rev. John Hill ![]() Golden Cross Sunday September 12 By the year 2030, the Tennessee-Western Kentucky Conference will include 600,000+ adults over the age of 65, a 24 percent increase from today’s population. Through your financial support, the Golden Cross Foundation is expanding older adult ministry throughout the conference, creating opportunities for spiritual fellowship and access to quality nutrition, healthcare, housing, and transportation for older adults in addition to retrofitting facilities for accessibility. We see a society in which older adults live successfully in the embrace of a loving community. This Golden Cross Sunday, join us in making this vision a reality. This Sunday we will take up a special offering for the Golden Cross Foundation to support ministry with older adults across our annual conference. We are especially delighted to receive the offering this year because Crievewood received a grant of $5,000 from the Golden Cross Foundation to help pay for our new audio/visual equipment in the sanctuary and for livestreaming. Receiving this offering is a way to pay that generosity forward to others. You can give through the church with an indication in the memo line of your check or on the offering envelope, or you can give directly to the Golden Cross Foundation at the address below. Contact: Suzanne Newman @ 615-824-8725 Pastor’s Pen We have several changes taking place in our staff this month. On September 15, Jan Bassett, our long-time Administrative Assistant, will be retiring. We will all miss Jan and are so grateful for her many years of work and ministry as part of the Crievewood staff. On a personal note, I am especially grateful that she was willing to wait until this month to retire so that I could have more than a full year under my belt as senior pastor with her wisdom and knowledge to help. We will celebrate and honor Jan during worship on September 12. I hope you’ll make plans to join us in person that day or to participate online. If you would like to give a card or contribute to a love offering for Jan, please give those to Joe Buffler. September 15 will also be Rev. Chelsey Hedglin’s last day as our Associate Pastor. As Chelsey announced in the last newsletter, she feels a particular calling to the ministry of chaplaincy and has accepted a full-time position as a chaplain with Ascension St. Thomas Midtown Hospital. Thankfully, she will stay on staff at Crievewood as our part-time Youth Minister. It will be an adjustment for us all as her responsibilities and hours shift. I would ask that we all be respectful of the boundaries that she needs and deserves to set to live into this new reality. For example, if you come to her with something that is not youth-related, she will likely point you to me or someone else to help. We want her to be able to focus on the youth ministry in this new staff configuration. Leigh Ann Cate will shift into the role of our full-time Office Administrator and will take on the responsibilities and duties that Jan was previously fulfilling. Leigh Ann is a gifted administrator and communicator with a long history at Crievewood as well as experience in the financial industry. All of this, along with her creativity, hospitality, and more, have got me feeling excited for her to step into this role. The pandemic has shown us the need for creativity and flexibility in today’s world. As such, we will be shifting the church office hours to 9:00 until 3:00 on Monday through Friday, and Leigh Ann will be working from home during some of those hours. So, you may get to see volunteers at certain times (especially Fridays) if you stop by the office. We are also looking to hire a part-time Children’s Ministry Director. You can view more information about the position on our website. Please pass along the info to anyone who might be interested. We are currently accepting resumes and hope to begin interviewing candidates soon. Change can be hard, especially when it is big or when a lot of it is happening at once. I’m grateful to our Staff-Parish Relations Committee (SPRC) and their faithfulness in navigating these changes. They worked hard to minimize the disruption while also honoring our present and anticipated staffing and financial needs. Moving from four full-time staff to two will be an adjustment, but it brings us more into alignment with other churches who are similar to our size and will relieve some pressure that has been on our budget. I celebrate with Jan and this next step in her life. I’m glad that Leigh Ann and Chelsey will continue to be part of our staff but in different roles. I’m grateful that Caleb, Hailee, and Robert will continue their ministry as staff members related to our worship and music. And I’m excited to see who will join us to direct our children’s ministry. Please be in prayer for all these transitions and let me know if you have any questions or concerns. Likewise, tell the older women to be reverent in behavior, not to be slanderers or slaves to drink; they are to teach what is good, so that they may encourage the young women to love their husbands, to love their children, to be self-controlled, chaste, good managers of the household, kind, being submissive to their husbands, so that the word of God may not be discredited. Likewise, urge the younger men to be self-controlled. Show yourself in all respects a model of good works, and in your teaching show integrity, gravity, and sound speech that cannot be censured; then any opponent will be put to shame, having nothing evil to say of us. Tell slaves to be submissive to their masters and to give satisfaction in every respect; they are not to talk back, not to pilfer, but to show complete and perfect fidelity, so that in everything they may be an ornament to the doctrine of God our Savior. For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation to all, training us to renounce impiety and worldly passions, and in the present age to live lives that are self-controlled, upright, and godly, Sermon: Little Letters – Titus: Rev. Forgive us through your great mercy and empower us to walk as people of the light, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Silence for Personal Prayers of Confession Kyrie Words of Assurance * Hear the Good News: Christ died for us while we were yet sinners. That proves God’s love toward us. In the name of Jesus Christ, you are forgiven. In the name of Jesus Christ, you are forgiven. Glory to God! Amen. The Great Thanksgiving: UMH pages 9-10: Rev. John Hill and Rev. Chelsey Hedglin The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them up to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Almighty God, creator of heaven and earth. You formed us in your image and breathed into us the breath of life. When we turned away, and our love failed, your love remained steadfast. You delivered us from captivity, made covenant to be our sovereign God, and spoke to us through your prophets. And so, with your people on earth and all the company of heaven we praise your name and join their unending hymn: Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. Holy are you, and blessed is your Son Jesus Christ. Your Spirit anointed him to preach good news to the poor, to proclaim release to the captives and recovering sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed, and to announce that the time had come when you would save your people. He healed the sick, fed the hungry, and ate with sinners. By baptism of his suffering, death, and resurrection you gave birth to your church, delivered us form slavery to sin and death, and made with us a new covenant by water and the Spirit. When the Lord Jesus ascended, he promised to be with us always, in the power of your Word and Holy Spirit. On the night in which he gave himself up for us, he took bread, gave thanks to you, broke the bread, gave it to his disciples, and said: “Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” When supper was over, he took the cup, gave thanks to you, gave it to his disciples, and said: “Drink from this, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.” And so, in remembrance of these your mighty acts in Jesus Christ, we offer ourselves in praise and thanksgiving as a holy and living sacrifice, in union with Christ’s offering for us, as we proclaim the mystery of faith. Christ has died; Christ is risen; Christ will come again. Pour out your Holy Spirit on us gathered here, and on these gifts of bread and the cup. Make them be for us the body and blood of Christ, that we may be for the world the body of Christ, redeemed by his blood. By your Spirit make us one with Christ, one with each other, and one in ministry to all the world, until Christ comes in final victory and we feast at his heavenly banquet. Through your Son Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit in your holy church, all honor and glory is yours, almighty God, now and for ever. Amen. ![]() 9:30 am – CUMC Worship in person in the sanctuary and online Access the online service at https://www.facebook.com/CrievewoodUMC/Pastor’s Pen One of my favorite passages of scripture is 1 Samuel 3:1-9 when God calls Samuel into a life of ministry. What strikes me the most about Samuel’s story is what we can learn about God, about ourselves, our own callings, and about those who nurture us and usher us toward them. This story illustrates for us what it means to be truly devoted to God, to listen to the callings that God places in our lives, and to trust in the people that God places in our lives. I preach about callings a lot. In fact, I have a minor in “Faith & Work” from Millsaps College, so a large part of my college experience centered around the academic study of calling and how faith speaks into vocation. There is a quote by Frederick Buechner that is sort of the cornerstone of the academic study of vocation. Buechner says, “The place God calls you to is the place where your deep gladness and the world’s deep hunger meet.” It is time that I practice what I preach, respond to God’s call in my life, and meet the place where my deep gladness and the world’s deep huger meet—I will be transitioning to full-time ministry as a hospital chaplain at Ascension St. Thomas Midtown Hospital, specifically serving the maternal/fetal units. As I make this transition, I wanted to briefly share with you the thought process that has led to this decision. I have been in deep prayer and discernment about this transition to full-time hospital chaplaincy. I feel that God has called me into this specific role in the hospital, and I cannot deny that calling. As you may know, I did a CPE residency at Ascension St. Thomas Midtown in 2017-2018 before my current appointment to Crievewood UMC as Associate Pastor. Since that residency, I have not been able to fully shake God’s call to hospital chaplaincy. I have loved every minute of my time in congregational ministry, and frankly was not looking to make a transition, but of course God had a different vision. I am now feeling like God is calling me to a specific position within the Ascension St. Thomas system–Staff Chaplain for the maternal/fetal unit at Ascension St. Thomas Midtown Hospital. This position will include a very specific role of being present for mothers and families who are experiencing fetal and infant loss. After working in hospital chaplaincy in my internship and residency and then in congregational ministry for the past three years, I recognized and realized that not every pastor is called or able to navigate that very specific world of loss. I feel that God has placed a spiritual gift upon me to be able to emotionally, spiritually, and mentally navigate the world of presence for parents experiencing loss, and I don’t want to ignore that call. I have been blessed beyond measure during my time as Associate Pastor at Crievewood. You all have seen me through many transitions in my life and in my role at Crievewood—from your Turner Scholar Intern while a student at Vanderbilt Divinity School, to part-time youth pastor while completing my chaplaincy residency, to Associate Pastor. Now it is time for one more transition at Crievewood—I will be transitioning from Associate Pastor to part-time Youth Pastor, so I will not be a stranger. You have seen me through my Residency in Ministry process in the Mississippi Conference from commissioning to ordination in full connection as an elder in the United Methodist Church. Your support along the way has been truly amazing, and I will be forever grateful. You have been there for me as I carried the weight of personal loss in the death of my grandmother, and I pray that I was a fraction of present for you all in your times of need that you were for me. We’ve said goodbye to some of our Crievewood saints together, and hello to newcomers. The cycle and circle of life in ministry has been moving, and it will continue to move when I’m gone. While I may not see you every Sunday morning in worship in my current role, or every Tuesday morning at Bible Study, I will carry you with me—what you taught me and how you’ve supported me—as I walk the halls of the hospital. I would not be who I am without the people of Crievewood United Methodist Church, and for you, I am forever grateful. Chelsey Hedglin Liturgists With Chelsey’s transition to full time hospital chaplaincy Crievewood will no longer have two members of the clergy who are appointed to the church full time. Our current practice is typically for one clergyperson to preach and for the other to serve as a liturgist during our worship services. Beginning September 12, we would like to have church members regularly serving in the role of liturgist for worship. We’d like to create a good base of volunteers and then set up a rotation for when they would help to lead the worship service. This would involve leading the congregation in a call to worship and either an opening prayer or affirmation of faith and reading the scripture passage for the day. No extemporaneous speaking is required; everything would be written ahead of time. Adults, youth, and older children are welcome to serve in the rotation. If you are interested, please reach out to any staff member to let us know. ![]() Tuesday Bible Study Tuesday Bible Study continues to meet weekly in person at 9:30 in the morning in the Builders classroom. The group is finishing the book The Wesleyan Wayby Scott J. Jones. Beginning August 31st, they will begin a new study called The Gift of Imperfection by Brene Brown. Anyone may join the study; please contact the office to obtain class materials. Farmers’ MarketThe farmers’ market gathers each Thursday at 4:30 pm in the Crievewood upper parking lot. The vendors offer a variety of food items including fresh produce, meats, delicious snacks, and baked goods. Please come and check it out as there are only a few market nights left this summer to enjoy these homemade and homegrown items. The last market of the season is September 2nd. South End UMC Food Program South End UMC food program continues on Wednesdays through the end of August. Volunteers are needed to unload and organize the food in the Fellowship Hall at South End UMC. All you have to do is show up at about 9:45 a.m., and someone from South End UMC will guide you on what to do.New Mission Statement Crievewood has been working with Project Thrive out of the Center for Healthy Churches at Belmont University since last year. Our Thrive Team has spent lots of time thinking, praying, and discussing what gives Crievewood its unique identity and how God is calling us to thrive in the future. On the heels of our second congregation-wide conversation, the Thrive Team sent the following proposal to the Administrative Council, which officially adopted these statements for our church at its meeting this past Sunday. We believe they reflect both who we are and who God is calling us to be. They will guide our life and ministry together for the foreseeable future, and we’ll learn more about them during a sermon series starting on October 17. Crievewood United Methodist Church “Community Happens Here” Rooted in our understanding of the nature of the Triune God as existing in eternal community (John 1:1), the human need for connection and community (Genesis 2:18), the way that God is present and works through Christian community (Matthew 18:20), and Crievewood’s ministry throughout its history with the Crieve Hall community, Crievewood United Methodist Church adopts the mission statement: “Community Happens Here.” For us, community means: A place to belong: We want you to find a home at Crievewood UMC where you are known and know others and where you can experience deep spiritual connections. When you walk in the doors, you are greeted and invited in. We want to know your name and your story. We want to foster meaningful connection and deep conversation. We want to care for one another and be present for one another as the body of Christ. We are committed to fostering connections with and serving the neighborhood of Crieve Hall. A place to be loved: We care about your story and welcome all people where they are as part of the beautifully diverse body of Christ. No matter where you’ve come from, and no matter where you’re going, you have a place at Crievewood UMC. Your story matters, and nothing should exclude you from being welcomed in as a child of God and becoming engaged in the Crievewood UMC community. We want you to know that God loves you unconditionally and constantly offers you grace. We honor one another by offering hospitality to each other where we are—not forcing folks to be who they are not. We acknowledge that we all have a story—a past, a present, and a future—and that our stories shape us. A place to engage: We believe that everyone matters and can share their gifts in meaningful ways. We acknowledge that we each have unique God-given spiritual gifts that vary widely. We work together to see the gifts in others that they don’t always see in themselves. We engage one another in conversation and honor varied theological perspectives by naming that real growth happens when we can converse with one another through a loving lens. We offer various ways to participate in fellowship and community, whether that’s through small faith-formation groups, Bible studies, missional experiences, community engagement with the Crieve Hall neighborhood, age-level ministries, and/or worship opportunities. A place to serve: We have a heart for mission and want to serve God and neighbor here in Crieve Hall and around the world. We participate in mission and service through long-standing partnerships as well as through emergent opportunities when needs become known to us. We seek to find ways where our resources and passion intersect with the needs of the world as we strive to follow Jesus’ call in Matthew 25 to care for the marginalized and seek the welfare of others. A place to grow: We are committed to helping you grow in faith, wherever you are now, through the means of God’s grace. As part of our Wesleyan heritage, these means of grace include worship, sacraments, study, prayer, fellowship, works of mercy, and works of justice. We believe that all of these means of grace connect us to something bigger than ourselves. By participating in these means of grace, we are given opportunities to grow in our faith so that we can be prepared to create community and make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world. ![]() As you know MANY businesses in Nashville are trying to hire employees; child care is no different. Some centers have had to close rooms or close totally due to a lack of staff. Crievewood has survived challenges in the past will strive to meet these staffing shortages. We are currently seeking a new full time teacher to love our 2 year olds, plus we will have 2-3 afternoon positions open once our summer teachers leave. Also the center will be looking for a new bus driver. Mr. Joe isn’t leaving us right away, but he would like to retire in the next year.
