Pastor’s Pen |
What a start to the fall semester we have had! For our family, school started back in person on August 10. Most of the meetings and orientation and similar events were held virtually, though. My kids had to quarantine and stay home from school a few weeks ago because they had a close exposure to someone with COVID. Thankfully, neither of them got sick. Most of their extracurricular activities have started back up. They are wearing masks at school, and parents are not really allowed in the building. School is getting back to normal…kinda. I think that’s how it is in a lot of areas of our lives. Things are getting back to normal…kinda. No one is quite sure what is safe to do and what isn’t. We all make the best decisions we can. Some places are fully open. Others are still closed. Many are open with modifications. Some people are wearing masks everywhere they go while others aren’t. Some are staying home most of the time while others are venturing out more. We continue to wrestle with what is the most appropriate way for Crievewood to be open and engaged in ministry. Like elsewhere, we are getting back to normal…kinda. We are worshiping in person with masks, but our attendance is nowhere near what it was before the pandemic. Some small groups are meeting in person, some virtually, and some not at all. Confirmation has begun, youth group continues, and children’s worship is taking place. We have cut back on our mission activities and special events and aren’t starting new ministries that we might otherwise. It’s a difficult season, and I’m so grateful for your prayers and patience during it. We do have some events coming up that I hope you’ll plan to attend. This Sunday, October 3, is World Communion Sunday. Rev. Dr. Tom Binford will be preaching, and Cherie White, a retired missionary, will serve as the liturgist. It will be a wonderful service and celebration. The following Sunday, October 10, our District Superintendent Rev. Scott Aleridge will be preaching and then preside over our annual charge conference. Then on October 17, we will have our third Congregation-wide Conversation with Project Thrive immediately after the worship service. You can RSVP here. Also, at 2:00 that day we will have a Blessing of the Animals service. You see, back to normal…kinda. One piece of good news to share. We have hired Jessie Zei as our part-time Children’s Ministry Coordinator. Jessie and her husband Mike moved to Crieve Hall from California near the beginning of the pandemic and joined the church back in March when they had little Winnie baptized. Jessie brings experience teaching children of various ages, a love for the church, and a great sense of enthusiasm to the position. We are so thrilled to have her as the newest member of the Crievewood staff team…no kinda needed here! |

Opportunities to Serve Liturgists WantedWhile we have some volunteers to serve in the role of liturgist for worship, the plan is to create a base of 12-15 persons on a rotation schedule. This would involve leading the congregation in a call to worship and either an opening prayer or affirmation of faith and reading the scripture passage for the day. No extemporaneous speaking is required; everything would be written ahead of time. Adults, youth, and older children are welcome to serve in the rotation. If you are interested, please reach out to any staff member to let us know. AIM at Mountain Top The annual CUMC Adult Fall Mission Trip to Mountain T.O.P. has been scheduled for the weekend of October 21-24. Anyone 18 years and up who would like to join the team and help with needed home repairs for the residents of the Cumberland Mountains, please contact Keith Head at Lkhead@aol.com. No experience needed! Flood Assistance As one might imagine clean-up and rebuilding are still taking place in Humphreys County. If you would like to help flood victims in that area, the most direct and efficient way to send relief is through the Tennessee Conference. You may donate online on the conference website. To donate by check, make the check out to Tennessee Conference with Disaster Response in the memo line. Send the check toTennessee Conference PO Box 440132 Nashville TN 37244-0132 |

Other Notes Charge Conference: Crievewood’s 2021 Charge Conference has been scheduled for Sunday, October 10, 2021, right after the worship service. Still Looking … Child Care is excited to welcome Iman Word to the staff as our full-time 2 year-old teacher. We are currently seeking 2-3 afternoon positions (could be full-time), as well as a bus driver. So if you know of anyone who would LOVE your children the way we do here at the center, please have them contact Sharon at director@crievewoodumc.org. Habitat for Humanity Hear ye! Hear ye! Methodists of Nashville, we need you. Crievewood as a congregation is not directly sponsoring a Habitat build this year; however, a request has come to the church for volunteers to work on the Methodist Habitat Build. This year’s build is a little different in that the project is a townhouse community, the Sherwood Commons Townhouse Community in East Nashville. Work starts in a few days, and there are still volunteer slots to fill. You do not need experience to volunteer. If you are interested or if you have questions, contact Carol McDonough at kimandcarolmcdo@comcast.net or check out the website below for information on how to help, build dates, registration, etc. https://volunteerhabitatnashville.cloud9strategies.com/methodist-build/ |
