John Hill Centering Music:”We Will Stand” Caleb Dinger, Piano Call to Worship Tandy Taylor God is calling us to create a community where everyone is welcome Community Happens Here For us, community means… A place to belong A place to be loved A place to engage A place to serve A place to grow Hymn: “We Gather Together“ We gather together to ask the Lord’s blessing; he chastens and hastens his will to make known. The wicked oppressing now cease from distressing. Sing praises to his name, he forgets not his own. Beside us to guide us, our God with us joining, ordaining, maintaining his kingdom divine; so from the beginning the fight we were winning; thou, Lord, wast at our side, all glory be thine! We all do extol thee, thou leader triumphant, and pray that thou still our defender wilt be. Let thy congregation escape tribulation; thy name be ever praised! O Lord, make us free! Hymn: “Great Are You Lord“ Verse You give life; you are love. You bring light to the darkness. You give hope; you restore every heart that is broken. And great are you Lord. Chorus It’s your breath in our lungs, So we pour out our praise; We pour out our praise. It’s your breath in our lungs, So we pour out our praise to you only. Verse You give life; you are love. You bring light to the darkness. You give hope; you restore every heart that is broken. And great are you, Lord. (Chorus) It’s your breath in our lungs, So we pour out our praise; We pour out our praise. It’s your breath in our lungs, So we pour out our praise to you only. Bridge (2x) And all the earth will shout your praise Our hearts will cry; these bones will sing Great are you Lord (Chorus) It’s your breath in our lungs, So we pour out our praise; We pour out our praise. It’s your breath in our lungs, So we pour out our praise to you only. Statement of Identity Tandy Taylor Rooted in our understanding of the nature of the Triune God as existing in eternal community, the human need for connection and community, the way that God is present and works through Christian community, and Crievewood’s ministry throughout its history with the Crieve Hall community, Crievewood United Methodist Church seeks to create a community where everyone has a place to belong, be loved, engage, serve, and grow: “Community Happens Here.” Scripture Reading: Hebrews 10:23-25 Tandy Taylor “Let us hold fast to the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who has promised is faithful. And let us consider how to provoke one another to love and good deeds, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day approaching.” Sermon: “Community Happens Here” Rev. John Hill Instrumental Reflection: “En Communidad“ Pastoral Prayer Rev. John Hill The Lord’s Prayer Invitation to Offer Tithes and Gifts https://onrealm.org/CrievewoodUMC/Give Offertory Anthem: “Open Up” Caleb Dinger, Piano/Vocals; Hailee Hunt-Hawkins, Vocals You heard the cry of our hearts, And you came down. Freely you gave us your love, Showing us how. Make me an instrument of your peace. Where there is hatred let me sow love. Where there is darkness let me shine light, and May your love cause us to open up. Cause us to open up our hearts. May your light cause us to shine so bright That we bring hope into the dark. All that we do without love, It means nothing. Grant us the courage to give As you’re calling. Make me an instrument of your peace. Where there is hatred let me sow love. Where there is darkness let me shine light, and May your love cause us to open up. Cause us to open up our hearts. May your light cause us to shine so bright That we bring hope into the dark. Hope for the hopeless, your love is strength in our weakness. Your love is. May we love, as you love. May we love, as you love. May your love cause us to open up. Cause us to open up our hearts. May your light cause us to shine so bright That we bring hope into the dark. Prayer of Confession Rev. John Hill God of covenant and companionship, you have called us to create a beloved community where all people have a place to flourish. Yet we know that many feel isolated and live in despair. Forgive us where we have failed to welcome the stranger, to love the outcast, to get to know our neighbor, to serve those in need, and to teach our children. Grant us the grace to become the community you would have us to be, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Kyrie Words of Assurance Rev. John Hill Hear the Good News: Christ died for us while we were yet sinners. That proves God’s love toward us. In the name of Jesus Christ, you are forgiven. In the name of Jesus Christ, you are forgiven! Glory to God. Amen. Closing Hymn: “Blest Be the Tie that Binds“ Blest be the tie that binds our hearts in Christian love; the fellowship of kindred minds is like to that above. Before our Father’s throne we pour our ardent prayers; our fears, our hopes, our aims are one, our comforts and our cares. We share each other’s woes, our mutual burdens bear; and often for each other flows the sympathizing tear. When we asunder part, it gives us inward pain; but we shall still be joined in heart, and hope to meet again Benediction and Sending Forth: Rev. John Hill |

Meet our Newest Staff Member! We are excited to introduce you to Jessie Zei, our new Children’s Ministry Director. Jessie and her husband Mike grew up in the Dallas area and moved their family to Crieve Hall from California. They have two children, Louie and Winnie. Winnie was baptized at Crievewood back in the spring. Jessie brings preschool teaching experience and a contagious enthusiasm for…everything, giving her a great foundation for her new position. We asked Jessie what she wanted to let her church family know about her, and she said, “I love tacos; I love Nashville; and I really love to dance, especially dance parties with my kids.” She also asks that you introduce yourself when you see her on Sundays because she is excited to meet her new church family. Welcome to Crievewood, Jessie! |
Pastor’s Pen |
This past Sunday was our annual charge conference. If you’ve been a Methodist for a while, this term is probably familiar to you. If not, the charge conference is the official business meeting of a local congregation. The word charge refers to the appointment of a clergyperson to provide care to an area or congregation(s), and the word conference is the one we Methodists use for official meetings at all levels of our denomination (annual conference, jurisdictional conference, general conference, etc.). There are some official business items that we do each year at charge conference, such as setting the salary of appointed pastors and electing leadership positions for the following year (which we delayed because the Admin Council is considering some changes to how we structure this). The bulk of charge conference, though, is a long series of reports from various parts of our life together. If you’re interested, you can read them all here. Part of that longer report is my Pastor’s Report in which I reflect on the past year. I would especially invite you to take a few minutes to read it. It’s three pages long so it shouldn’t take too much time. Writing it gave me a chance to feel a great sense of gratitude for our resilience and perseverance as a congregation and to be reminded that God is at work even in these strange times. May it continue to be so. |
9:30 am – Crievewood UMC Worship in person in the sanctuary and online Access the online service at https://www.facebook.com/CrievewoodUMC/ We begin a new sermon series this Sunday called “Community Happens Here.” This is the new motto that the Administrative Council has adopted for Crievewood. We’ll spend the next 6 weeks looking at it and the 5 core values we’ve discerned and adopted through Project Thrive. |
Opportunities to Serve Liturgists WantedWe have created a rotation of volunteers to serve in the role of liturgist for worship, and we are looking for more people to be part of it. This involves leading the congregation in a call to worship and either an opening prayer or affirmation of faith and reading the scripture passage for the day. No extemporaneous speaking is required; everything would be written ahead of time. Adults, youth, and older children are welcome to serve in the rotation. If you are interested, please reach out to Laurie Coggins or the church office. Kids’ Worship Helpers We are always looking for extra hands to have fun with us on Sunday mornings between 9:30 and 10:30. Lessons are planned, and helpers have the most fun job–interacting directly with the kids while our leaders teach lead the lessons. We would love to schedule some youth helpers, 7th grade and up. Please contact Jessie with questions or to volunteer! AIM at Mountain Top The annual CUMC Adult Fall Mission Trip to Mountain T.O.P. has been scheduled for the weekend of October 21-24. Anyone 18 years and up who would like to join the team and help with needed home repairs for the residents of the Cumberland Mountains, please contact Keith Head at Lkhead@aol.com. No experience needed! |

We invite each of you to bring your pets, and please make sure your pets are secure as other animals will be present. |

Tom Binford Prelude:”Sound a Mystic Bamboo Song,” Caleb Dinger, Piano and accompanied by Paige Dinger on the finger cymbals Call to Worship Leader: Our Sovereign God, how majestic is your name in all the earth! People: We gather as your children, connected in Christ. Leader: What are human beings that you are mindful of them, mortals that you care for them? People: We gather as your children, seeking your kingdom. Leader: You have given them dominion over the works of your hands; you have put all things under their feet. People: We gather as your children, ready to be your hands and feet in the world. All: Our Sovereign God, how majestic is your name in all the earth! Hymn: “We’ve a Story to Tell to the Nations” We’ve a story to tell to the nations, that shall turn their hearts to the right, a story of truth and mercy, a story of peace and light, a story of peace and light. For the darkness shall turn to dawning and the dawning to noonday bright and Christ’s great kingdom shall come on earth the kingdom of love and light. We’ve a song to be sung to the nations that shall lift their hearts to the Lord a song that shall conquer evil and shatter the spear and sword and shatter the spear and sword. For the darkness shall turn to dawning and the dawning to noonday bright and Christ’s great kingdom shall come on earth the kingdom of love and light. We’ve a message to give to the nations that the Lord who reigneth above hath sent us his Son to save us and show us that God is love and show us that God is love. For the darkness shall turn to dawning and the dawning to noonday bright and Christ’s great kingdom shall come on earth the kingdom of love and light. We’ve a Savior to show to the nations who the path of sorrow hath trod that all of the world’s great peoples might come to the truth of God might come to the truth of God. For the darkness shall turn to dawning and the dawning to noonday bright and Christ’s great kingdom shall come on earth the kingdom of love and light. Opening Prayer O God, we join with our sisters and brothers around the world in remembering Christ’s sacrifice for us. For the opportunity to eat and drink together and for the life we have received, we give you thanks and praise. In the abundance of your many gifts, grant us grace to fill one another’s lives with love. Redeem, restore and remold us until we are made new. Transform our daily bread into the bread of life, and the cup that we drink into the cup of salvation. We pray in Jesus’ name. Amen Scripture Reading: Matthew 21:23-32 When he entered the temple, the chief priests and the elders of the people came to him as he was teaching, and said, ‘By what authority are you doing these things, and who gave you this authority?’ Jesus said to them, ‘I will also ask you one question; if you tell me the answer, then I will also tell you by what authority I do these things. Did the baptism of John come from heaven, or was it of human origin?’ And they argued with one another, ‘If we say, “From heaven”, he will say to us, “Why then did you not believe him?” But if we say, “Of human origin”, we are afraid of the crowd; for all regard John as a prophet.’ So they answered Jesus, ‘We do not know.’ And he said to them, ‘Neither will I tell you by what authority I am doing these things.”What do you think? A man had two sons; he went to the first and said, “Son, go and work in the vineyard today.” He answered, “I will not”; but later he changed his mind and went. The father went to the second and said the same; and he answered, “I go, sir”; but he did not go. Which of the two did the will of his father?’ They said, ‘The first.’ Jesus said to them, ‘Truly I tell you, the tax-collectors and the prostitutes are going into the kingdom of God ahead of you. For John came to you in the way of righteousness and you did not believe him, but the tax-collectors and the prostitutes believed him; and even after you saw it, you did not change your minds and believe him. Meditation: “By What Authority?” : Rev. Tom Binford Hispanic Creed (Justo Gonzalez) We believe in God, the Father Almighty Creator of the heavens and the earth; Creator of the all peoples and all cultures; Creator of all tongues and races. We believe in Jesus Christ, his Son, our Lord, God made flesh in a person for all humanity, God made flesh in an age for all the ages, God made flesh in one culture for all cultures, God made flesh in love and grace for all creation. We believe in the Holy Spirit Through whom God incarnate in Jesus Christ Makes his presence known in our peoples and our cultures; Through whom, God Creator of all that exists, Gives us power to become new creatures; Whose infinite gifts make us one people: the body of Christ. We believe in the Church Universal because it is a sign of God’s Reign, Whose faithfulness is shown in its many hues Where all the colors paint a single landscape, Where all tongues sing the same praise. We believe in the Reign of God –the day of the Great Fiesta When all the colors of creation will form a harmonious rainbow, When all peoples will join in joyful banquet, When all tongues of the universe will sing the same song. And because we believe, we commit ourselves: To believe for those who do not believe, To love for those who do not love, To dream for those who do not dream, Until the day when hope becomes reality. Amen. Invitation Christ our Lord invites to his table all who love him. who earnestly repent of their sin and seek to live in peace with one another. Therefore, let us confess our sin before God and one another. Prayer of Confession Merciful God, we confess we have not loved you with our whole heart. We have failed to be an obedient church. We have not done your will, we have broken your law, we have rebelled against your love, we have not loved our neighbors, and we have not heard the cry of the needy. Forgive us, we pray. Free us for joyful obedience, through Jesus Christ our Lord.Amen Kyrie: “Pelas Dores Desde Mundo” (Brazilian Kyrie) For the troubles and the sufferings of the world, God, we call upon your mercy: the whole creation’s laboring in pain! Lend an ear to the rising cry for help from the oppressed and hopeless people. Come! Hasten your salvation, healing love! We pray for peace, the blessed peace that comes from making justice to cover and embrace us. Have mercy, Lord! We pray for power the power that will sustain your people’s witness until your Kingdom comes, Kyrie eleison! Words of Assurance Hear the Good News: Christ died for us while we were yet sinners. That proves God’s love toward us. In the name of Jesus Christ, you are forgiven. In the name of Jesus Christ, you are forgiven! Glory to God. Amen. Invitation to Offer Tithes and Gifts https://onrealm.org/CrievewoodUMC/Give Hymn: “One Bread, One Body” (UMH #620) One bread, one body, one Lord of all, One cup of blessing which we bless. And we, though many, throughout the earth We are one body in this one – Lord. Gentile or Jew, servant or free, Woman or man, no more. One bread, one body, one Lord of all One cup of blessing which we bless. And we, though many, throughout the earth We are one body in this one – Lord. Many the gifts, many the works one in the Lord of all. One bread, one body, one Lord of all One cup of blessing which we bless. And we, though many, throughout the earth We are one body in this one – Lord. Grain for the fields, scattered and grown gathered to one, for all. One bread, one body, one Lord of all One cup of blessing which we bless. And we, though many, throughout the earth We are one body in this one – Lord. The Great Thanksgiving The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them up to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. And so, with your people on earth and all the company of heaven we praise your name and join their unending hymn: Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. And so, in remembrance of these your mighty acts in Jesus Christ, we offer ourselves in praise and thanksgiving as a holy and living sacrifice, in union with Christ’s offering for us, as we proclaim the mystery of faith. Christ has died; Christ is risen; Christ will come again. All honor and glory is yours, almighty God, now and forever. Amen. The Lord’s Prayer Sharing of the Bread and Cup Closing Hymn: “Let There Be Peace on Earth“ Let there be peace on earth and let it begin with me let there be peace on earth, the peace that was meant to be. With God our creator, children all are we. Let us walk with each other in perfect harmony. Let peace begin with me, let this be the moment now. With every step I take, may this be my solemn vow To take each moment and live each moment in peace eternally. Let there be peace on earth, and let it begin with me. Benediction and Sending Forth: Rev. Tom Binford (Please remain seated for the postlude.) Postlude: “Siyahamba (We are Marching),” Caleb Dinger, Piano |

What a start to the fall semester we have had! For our family, school started back in person on August 10. Most of the meetings and orientation and similar events were held virtually, though. My kids had to quarantine and stay home from school a few weeks ago because they had a close exposure to someone with COVID. Thankfully, neither of them got sick. Most of their extracurricular activities have started back up. They are wearing masks at school, and parents are not really allowed in the building. School is getting back to normal…kinda. I think that’s how it is in a lot of areas of our lives. Things are getting back to normal…kinda. No one is quite sure what is safe to do and what isn’t. We all make the best decisions we can. Some places are fully open. Others are still closed. Many are open with modifications. Some people are wearing masks everywhere they go while others aren’t. Some are staying home most of the time while others are venturing out more. We continue to wrestle with what is the most appropriate way for Crievewood to be open and engaged in ministry. Like elsewhere, we are getting back to normal…kinda. We are worshiping in person with masks, but our attendance is nowhere near what it was before the pandemic. Some small groups are meeting in person, some virtually, and some not at all. Confirmation has begun, youth group continues, and children’s worship is taking place. We have cut back on our mission activities and special events and aren’t starting new ministries that we might otherwise. It’s a difficult season, and I’m so grateful for your prayers and patience during it. We do have some events coming up that I hope you’ll plan to attend. This Sunday, October 3, is World Communion Sunday. Rev. Dr. Tom Binford will be preaching, and Cherie White, a retired missionary, will serve as the liturgist. It will be a wonderful service and celebration. The following Sunday, October 10, our District Superintendent Rev. Scott Aleridge will be preaching and then preside over our annual charge conference. Then on October 17, we will have our third Congregation-wide Conversation with Project Thrive immediately after the worship service. You can RSVP here. Also, at 2:00 that day we will have a Blessing of the Animals service. You see, back to normal…kinda. One piece of good news to share. We have hired Jessie Zei as our part-time Children’s Ministry Coordinator. Jessie and her husband Mike moved to Crieve Hall from California near the beginning of the pandemic and joined the church back in March when they had little Winnie baptized. Jessie brings experience teaching children of various ages, a love for the church, and a great sense of enthusiasm to the position. We are so thrilled to have her as the newest member of the Crievewood staff team…no kinda needed here! |
