Because of weather, Ash Wednesday worship activities have been rescheduled so that everyone might participate safely. On Wednesday, February 24thwe will offer a drive through imposition of ashes from 5-6 p.m. in the CUMC upper parking lot and an online Ash Wednesday worship service at 6:30 p.m on Facebook. Access the online service at https://www.facebook.com/CrievewoodUMC/. The joint outdoor Ash Wednesday service at noon has been canceled.Pastor’s Pen Lent is the season of preparation leading up to Easter in the church calendar. Unlike Advent and its joyful expectation of Christmas, Lent invites us into a time of self-reflection, penitence, and even self-sacrifice. Our theme for Lent this year is “Embracing the Uncertain.” It feels almost too on the nose with the pandemic, the snow storm, and everything else going on in the world. The title comes from a book of the same name by Magrey deVega, a United Methodist pastor in Florida. Each week in worship, we’ll look at a different story from the Gospels of Jesus on his journey to Jerusalem (and ultimately the cross) in which he encounters a different form of uncertainty. Each worship service will also include some liturgy written by members of Crievewood (it’s not too late to send me something if you’re interested). Our Tuesday morning Bible study will use the book “Embracing the Uncertain” during Lent, and Leigh Ann Cate will lead a virtual study of the book on Zoom on Wednesday evenings at 6:30. Chelsey is preparing a self-guided Stations of the Cross that will be in the main hallway of the church for the entirety of Lent. You are welcome to come by any time the church is open to experience these interactive and contemplative stations. As always, please make sure that you wear a mask and maintain a safe distance from any others who are in the building Because of the snow storm, the bitter cold, and the impassibility of the roads, we have decided to postpone all of our Ash Wednesday activities until next week. Ash Wednesday usually marks the beginning of Lent, but this year – as we embrace the uncertain – we’ll remember our mortality and need for God’s grace a week into the season of Lent instead. We will offer a drive-through imposition of ashes from 5:00 to 6:00 pm and a livestream Ash Wednesday service on Facebook at 6:30 pm that you can watch live or catch the recording later. Note that our noon service with St. Mary of Bethany will not be taking place. I often give up something during the season of Lent. This practice of fasting or abstinence or self-denial has a long history within the church, and you may feel called to that practice this year. With all that we’ve already had to give up over the past year, though, I’m feeling called to take on something during Lent this year rather than give up something. As I’ve prayed about what practice to take on, I’ve landed on intentionally making contact with one person outside of my household each day. As an introvert, it’s easy for me to just hang out at home and keep to myself during the pandemic and the winter. At the same time, I find myself longing for connection with others. My intention is to make a video or phone call, send a note, or maybe even meet up with someone in a safe way each day until Easter. I hope you’ll give some thought and prayer to a practice that you can take up during Lent, and I’d love to hear how it goes. Grace and peace, John Hill Join us for Sunday Worship in Lent 10:45 am Livestreamed Worship on Facebook from the Sanctuary https://www.facebook.com/CrievewoodUMC/and starting on February 28th 10::45 am In Person Indoor Worship Please see the article belowCOVID TASK FORCE UPDATE Crievewood will resume in-person worship in the Sanctuary on Sunday, February 28, at 10:45 am. Our COVID Task Force met on February 16 and made this decision in light of the positive trends here in Nashville. The worship service will continue to be livestreamed on our Facebook page. As always, you can watch live or catch the recording anytime later. Since we’ll be offering indoor in-person worship, we will no longer be holding an outdoor service. We will continue the practice and policy of requiring masks in the building, maintaining social distance of at least 6 feet from those not in your household, and cleaning spaces after usage. If you feel comfortable, we look forward to seeing you in person starting on February 28.Patience with Live-Streamed WorshipWe are grateful for the technology that allows us to share and experience worship in our homes during this time. Any time we use technology, though, there is a chance that it will not perform up to our expectations. If you are watching the worship service as it is being streamed live on Sunday morning on Facebook, the video may sometimes pause and you may get a message like “Live Feed Interrupted.” This indicates an issue with the video being transmitted over the internet and not a problem with your computer or other device. The best thing to do is to simply wait (sometimes even a minute or longer) and let the problem correct itself. There is no need to refresh or restart. When the feed comes back on its own, it will be right where it left off. If you refresh or restart, you will resume in the current space in the service rather than where the stream froze. We hope this tip helps! Also, you can always find a recorded version of our worship services, including past worship services, on our Facebook page by clicking on the “videos” tabMissions Crievewood Serves South End has extended their Food Program into February, and their need for volunteers has continued as well.
