will be posted on Facebook Saturday at noon.
Pastor’s Pen
Liturgy. It’s how we conduct our worship as followers of Christ. We usually use the term to refer to the words we say and the actions we do together during a service of worship. It’s the prayers, the creeds, the sacraments, and the entire order of worship. It’s the idea that we are responding to God’s love and grace together as a community by offering worship to the Divine.

There have been many strange things about being a pastor and leading in worship during the pandemic. Preaching to a tiny camera on an iPhone rather than to a room full of people is one of them. But I think even stranger than that for me has been the lack of the collective voice of the congregation during worship. When I pray the Lord’s Prayer or recite the Apostles’ Creed, I’m used to hearing a congregation say the words with me. When I remind you, “In the name of Jesus Christ, you are forgiven,” it is so odd not to hear those words echoed back to me. It is strange that I can’t say, “The Lord be with you,” and hear in return, “And also with you.”

Liturgy literally means “the work of the people” or “the work for the people.” It comes from the Greek word leitourgia, which is a mashup of laos (people; we get the term laity from it) and ergo (work, like ergonomic or energy). As we continue to worship God in the midst of a pandemic, the staff is striving to find ways for our worship to feel like more people are involved, like it is a communal act. We may not be able to hear everyone’s voice together, but there are steps we can take. You may have noticed that we’ve been having some of our leaders offer ministry moments during the service recently. You may also see people sharing their musical talents.

One of the ways we’d like to incorporate the voice of the congregation into our worship is by having members of the congregation write pieces of the liturgy during the season of Lent. Our theme for Lent will be “Embracing the Uncertain,” and we’ll explore various stories from scripture in which people face uncertainty. We’d love to have as many contributions as possible. You could write a prayer, a poem, a reflection, a call to worship, anything really that has to do with uncertainty. I’m happy to work with you to come up with ideas or for you to simply send me something that you’ve written. Feel free to call or text me at 615-686-8381 or drop me an email at john@crievewoodumc.org. I’m excited to see the work we will all do together to worship God during this upcoming season.

Grace and peace,
John Hill
