The annual Dorothy Cortner Boone Scholarship is a bit late this year, due to COVID-19 and the quarantine. The scholarship’s purpose is to reward financial assistance to selected students who (1) demonstrate involvement in and service to his/her school and/or community, (2) are motivated toward educational excellence. The scholarship may be awarded to more than one recipient. If you have been awarded this scholarship in the past or if you have applied for this scholarship before, you may re-apply. You may receive the scholarship more than once. There is no age requirement. Any student who is a member of Crievewood United Methodist Church may apply for this scholarship. An application form may be obtained in the church office. Completed applications MUST be received in the church office no later than Sunday, August 23, 2020. This scholarship is available to part time as well as full time students. We are fortunate to have this scholarship available at our church. Please take advantage of this wonderful opportunity!! Please consult the scholarship form for further details. Scholarship Selection CommitteePastor’s Pen When I was a child I was a little shy and pretty afraid to try new things. I think I was afraid to get things wrong or not to do them well, and that fear prevented me from doing certain activities. I’ve always liked to be able to master a task or skill – anything from a video game to school work to knowing each channel number on our cable package as a kid (Channel 33 was USA Network, in case you were wondering). If I didn’t already know how to do something, I often would avoid it. While I’ve overcome the shyness and the reticence around new experiences, I still like to get things right (Classic One on the Enneagram as I mentioned in Sunday’s sermon). One of the things about life and ministry during this time of a global pandemic is that no one really knows what the right thing to do is. Do we restart in-person worship soon or hold off until a later date? What are the chances that someone could get sick? Do we limit the number of people who can attend? What precautions do we need to take? What are the financial implications of waiting longer? What are the risks of not waiting long enough? Who even gets to make the decision? To what voices and data do we pay attention? Do we restart if only some of the congregation can attend or wait until everyone can? Do we have one service, or two, or more? There are no clear answers, and opinions will vary from person to person on these and other questions. The Administrative Council met – socially distanced with masks in the Sanctuary and via Zoom – on Sunday afternoon with these questions as the backdrop. The Council voted unanimously to have Chelsea and me appoint an ad hoc committee to think through these questions. We will gather this task force in the coming days to begin our work of discernment about when to restart in-person worship and how best to do so. The group will reflect a broad spectrum of demographics from the congregation and have representation from the medical community, the Trustees, the worship committee, and more. Before I arrived, the Administrative Council had hoped to restart in-person worship on the first Sunday of August, but we will continue to worship virtually until this working group recommends otherwise. I know that I feel a lot of pressure and desire to have a firm date when we can gather in the Sanctuary again, but I think it is best to allow other things to guide us than the calendar. I don’t know what the right answer is to when we should restart in-person worship. I don’t think anyone does. Maybe there isn’t even such a thing as a right answer to that question. But I’m grateful for people who are willing to wrestle with the question and look at it from different angles and perspectives. I trust that as we do that, God’s Spirit will guide us and together we’ll settle on something that seems best to our spirits. In the meantime, thank you for your patience. I long to be able to worship with you in person and meet many of you for the first time. Until then, see you on Facebook Live! Rev. John Hill Planned re-opening for in person worship is delayed. Both of us were raised and nurtured in faith communities, and cherish deeply the power of relationships in the body of Christ. You are a gift. We also want to offer thanksgiving to God for your witness to faith lived in word and deed. Beyond the privilege of serving God together, we have grown spiritually by your example. You are a blessing. And, we are grateful for the wonderful “drive-by good-bye”, the generous farewell gift, the many cards and letters, and the gracious DVD compilation that affirmed us in this transition. You are an instrument of God’s grace. With Crievewood UMC, we have shared life in such a sublime and meaningful context, we claim and trust the promise that even as the relationship has changed the bond in Christ is eternal. The two of us are settling into our new home, so far retirement (for Peter) looks like unpacking boxes, serving as Patti’s personal attaché, and substitute preaching at two rural congregations in Dickson County. We’ll get the hang of it eventually! Much love, Patti and PeterWashable masks are sewn by Bu Bu, a refugee from Burma who is an active member of the Golden Triangle Fellowship of Belmont UMC. The masks come in assorted colors and are for sale for $5.00 each. If you want to help Bu Bu by purchasing one or more masks, please contact Bill Lovell at (615) 310-7536. Bill Lovell is a former pastor of Crievewood UMC, and he has a small supply of these masks to sell for Bu Bu. Thanks for your consideration.Other Notes If you have not viewed the video made for Pastor Peter and Patti van Eys because you cannot open it, please email Barry Coggins at barrycoggins@comcast.net. The CHNA’s farmers’ market hosted by Crievewood UMC continues on Thursday evenings during the summer but with social distancing practices in place. The market has local produce including peaches and berries, meats, bread, and baked goods. Please come and support our local farmers. Crievewood has begun a ministry partnership with St. Mary of Bethany Anglican Parish. Once our building is ready for in-person worship, they will be using our sanctuary space to hold their service each Sunday at 4:00 pm. We look forward to additional opportunities for joint ministry with their congregation in spreading the love of Jesus throughout our city. Still looking for more information?
