Sunday, September 6 Online Worship continues on Facebook 10:45 am www.facebook.com/CrievewoodUMC/ Sunday, September 13 Outdoor Worship at the church at 9:30am Added on September 13: Children ages 3 years through second grade will have the option to attend Outdoor Kids’ Worship. Worship packets will be available for grades 3-6. Also Available: Recorded Online Worship Sunday, September 13 10:45am www.facebook.com/CrievewoodUMC/ Pastor’s Pen It was such a treat to see some of you in person for worship this past Sunday! I know the rain and the early time – along with uncertainty regarding the coronavirus – kept some folks away, but we had about 40 in attendance for our first outdoor worship service. We had a few hiccups – most notably my microphone wasn’t working properly and I can’t be heard very well on the video posted to our Facebook Page – and learned a lot for the next time we do this. Before I share about that, I want to give a quick shout-out to the Crievewood staff for making Sunday happen. Chelsey pulled the supplies together, did lots of other behind the scenes prep, and led well during the service as usual. Leigh Ann created packets for the kids to use during the service and acted as our greeter. Robert purchased the equipment we needed and put together an entire sound system for the service. Caleb and Hailee provided beautiful music (along with Eric Leyers on guitar) and an outside setup. And Jan prepped the service order the week before as she was on some much deserved vacation last week. I am so grateful to work with an amazing collection of talented and committed people, and I’m confident you share in that gratitude for your church staff. The service went well, and we received lots of positive feedback from the people in attendance and from our in-person worship task force, which met on Sunday afternoon. We decided to return to what we have been doing for this coming Sunday, September 6, and broadcast a service from the sanctuary without an in-person congregation at 10:45 followed by drive-through Holy Communion from 1:00 to 2:00 in the parking lot. Then, on Sunday, September 13, we will hold another outdoor service, but this time at 9:30 am. We are experimenting with the timing and format to see what works best and appreciate your flexibility and positive spirit. As a reminder, we’ll broadcast the service on 9/13 around 10:45 am for those who don’t attend in person, but if you do come please bring your own seating, wear a mask, and maintain social distancing from those not in your household. We decided to try the outdoor service because of the feedback that we received from the survey that we sent out to the congregation. That survey also revealed that over half of the folks who responded were interested in some type of small group during this season. Therefore, we are going to restart the Tuesday morning Bible Study at the church that Chelsey leads at 9:30. Participants will be asked to wear a mask and maintain social distancing. We are also going to hold a virtual small group study on Wednesday evenings at 6:30 beginning on September 23. I will lead this study using the book Sermon on the Mount: A Beginner’s Guide to the Kingdom of Heaven by Amy-Jill Levine. You can order the book through Cokesbury, Amazon, or other booksellers. The book is designed to be a six-week study, so it’s a short commitment but one I think will be educational and enriching. I hope you’ll consider joining me for it! For the month of September, we’ll be turning to the Gospels in worship with a series called The Character of Christ. Each week we’ll look at a different moment from Jesus’ life and ministry to see what convictions and character traits lie behind his actions and then be challenged and encouraged to cultivate those traits in our own lives. We’ll hear stories of Jesus doing strange things and spending time with surprising people. I’m looking forward to sharing and worshiping with you, either in person or online. Rev. John HillMissions AIM Mission to Mountain TopThe annual CUMC adult fall mission trip to Mountain Top has been scheduled for the weekend of October 15-18, pending MTOP’s ability to host the mission. There will be some procedural and logistical safety changes due to COVID-19. Anyone who feels comfortable going and would like to join the team and reach out to others by sharing your time, Christian love, and talent to help with needed home repair for the residents of the Cumberland Mountains, please call Joe Buffler at 615-351-0601. Keith Head and Chelsey Hedglin are also available to answer questions or concerns. Participants must be 18 years old, but no construction experience is required. Project Transformation Amid tornado and virus the Nashville Project Transformation team invented creative ways to connect those in the community with neighborhoods in need this summer. If you would like to review what happened this summer just click the button below.Project Transformation 2020This Sunday from 1-2 p.m. during the drive-up communion there will be a station near by where you will be able to drop off donations for Community Care Fellowship. Your donations of toilet paper last month were very much appreciated, but currently CCF is experiencing a shortage of paper towels. While the facility needs both toilet paper and paper towels, the paper towels are the priority. Consequently, this Sunday will be both a TP and PT Sunday. Thank you in advance for any item you are able to donate. Other Notes Because of the COVID-19 virus the Tennessee Annual Conference 2020 will be held virtually this year on September 18 and 19 with the theme By Faith. Members to Annual Conference should receive voting instruction and conference materials ahead of time, and they as well as congregation members can view the conference live-streamed. Consult the TN Conference website for more information. A button linking to the conference is at the end of the newsletter. If you know a Crievewood member who is not able to view Sunday services on Facebook, please call Kathryn Buffler at 615-598-5998. CD’s are made weekly and can be delivered so that all our members can at least hear the Sunday worship service.
