Hymns: Joy to the World and Lo, How a Rose E’er Blooming
  Joy to the World
Verse 1
Joy to the world, the Lord is come!
Let earth receive her King;
let every heart prepare him room,
and heaven and nature sing,
and heaven and nature sing,
and heaven, and heaven, and nature sing.

Verse 2
Joy to the world, the Savior reigns!
Let all their songs employ;
while fields and floods, rocks, hills and plains
repeat the sounding joy,
repeat the sounding joy,
repeat, repeat, the sounding joy.

Verse 3
No more let sins and sorrows grow,
nor thorns infest the ground;
he comes to make his blessings flow
far as the curse is found,
far as the curse is found,
far as, far as the curse is found.

Verse 4
He rules the world with truth and grace,
and makes the nations prove
the glories of his righteousness,
and wonders of His love,
and wonders of His love,
and wonders, wonders, of His love.

Lo, How a Rose E’er Blooming
Verse 1
Lo, how a Rose e’er blooming
from tender stem hath sprung!
Of Jesse’s lineage coming,
as those of old have sung.
It came, a floweret bright,
amid the cold of winter,
when half spent was the night.

Verse 2
Isaiah ’twas foretold it,
the Rose I have in mind;
with Mary we behold it,
the Virgin Mother kind.
To show God’s love aright,
she bore to us a Savior,
when half spent was the night.

Verse 3
O Flower, whose fragrance tender
with sweetness fills the air,
dispel in glorious splendor
the darkness everywhere.
True man, yet very God,
from sin and death now save us,
and share our every load.
Advent Liturgy (written by Matt Sevier) and
Lighting of the Advent Wreath: Locklayer FamilyReader 1: Blessed be Mary, God’s favored one.
Reader 2: And blessed be the fruit of her womb, the coming Christ child.
Reader 1: Mary shows us what it means to say ‘yes’,
Reader 2: and what it means to ‘let go and let God’.
Reader 1: Like Mary, let it be – according to God’s word.
Reader 2: Let the power of the Most High overshadow us.

Mary, the mother of Jesus, is the very picture of what faith and obedience looks like.  She takes a huge leap of faith, saying ‘yes’ to God.  By hearing and keeping the word of the Lord, she becomes highly favored by God.  She lets go of her own fears and insecurities, and in holy indifference, allows God to work through her.  As we light the third candle, we remember that God has done great things, God has brought down the powerful and lifted up the lowly, and God remembers his promises to be merciful to his servants.

Let us pray.
God of mercy and mystery, you are the Word fulfilled in our hearing.  As we hear the story of your incarnation, help us to follow the example of Mary and make Christ present in the world so that everyone might know of your mercy and love.  Take away our fear, and let your work be done in us.  With your spirit, we ask this in the name of the living Christ.  Amen.

 Scripture Reading: Luke 1:26-45: Rev. Chelsey Hedglin In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent by God to a town in Galilee called Nazareth, to a virgin engaged to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. The virgin’s name was Mary. And he came to her and said, “Greetings, favored one! The Lord is with you.” But she was much perplexed by his words and pondered what sort of greeting this might be. The angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. And now, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you will name him Jesus. He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Most High, and the Lord God will give to him the throne of his ancestor David. He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end.” Mary said to the angel, “How can this be, since I am a virgin?” The angel said to her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be holy; he will be called Son of God. And now, your relative Elizabeth in her old age has also conceived a son; and this is the sixth month for her who was said to be barren. For nothing will be impossible with God.” Then Mary said, “Here am I, the servant of the Lord; let it be with me according to your word.” Then the angel departed from her.In those days Mary set out and went with haste to a Judean town in the hill country, where she entered the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth. When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the child leaped in her womb. And Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit and exclaimed with a loud cry, “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb. And why has this happened to me, that the mother of my Lord comes to me? For as soon as I heard the sound of your greeting, the child in my womb leaped for joy. And blessed is she who believed that there would be a fulfillment of what was spoken to her by the Lord.”
