John Hill Hymns: O Come, All Ye Faithful and Joseph Dearest, Joseph Mine O Come, All Ye Faithful Verse 1O come, all ye faithful, joyful and triumphant! O come ye, O come ye, to Bethlehem. Come and behold him, born the King of angels; Refrain: O come, let us adore him, O come, let us adore him, O come, let us adore him, Christ, the Lord. Verse 2 True God of true God, Light of Light eternal, lo! he shuns not the Virgin’s womb; Son of the Father, begotten, not created; Repeat Refrain Verse 3 Sing, choirs of angels, sing in exultation; sing, all ye citizens of heaven above! Glory to God, all glory in the highest; Repeat Refrain Verse 5 Child, for us sinners poor and in a manger, we would embrace thee with love and awe. Who would not love thee, loving us so dearly? Repeat Refrain Joseph Dearest, Joseph MineVerse 1 Joseph dearest, Joseph mine, help me cradle the child divine; God reward thee and all that’s thine in paradise, so prays the mother Mary. Refrain: He came among us at Christmastime, at Christmastime, in Bethlehem; let us bring him from far and wide Love’s diadem: Jesus, Jesus, lo, he comes, and loves, and saves, and frees us! Verse 2 Gladly, dear one, lady mine, help I cradle this child of thine; God’s own light on us both shall shine in paradise, as prays the mother Mary. Repeat Refrain Verse 3 All shall come and bow the knee; wise and happy their souls shall be, loving such a divinity, as all may see in Jesus, Son of Mary. Repeat Refrain Advent Liturgy (written by Matt Sevier) and Lighting of the Advent Wreath: Tickle FamilyReader 1:God gives us gifts, sometimes in the silence. Reader 2: Unexpected people receive unexpected blessings at unexpected times. Reader 1: Imagine an outstanding person – completely blameless – Reader 2: Who gets thrust into a scandal he had nothing to do with. Reader 1: Imagine this outstanding person doing an unexpected thing – Reader 2: Saying ‘yes’ to God and daring to not be afraid. The story of Joseph is full of all things unexpected. A woman is pregnant, but unexpectedly her husband is not the father. The baby that is coming isn’t just a human, but unexpectedly also divine. A new family is forming, but unexpectedly it is a family related by something other than a bloodline. When we embrace the Holy Spirit and say ‘yes’ – just like Joseph did – we allow God to be with us. As we celebrate the mystery of faith, we know that by allowing God to be with us in the sharing of the bread and cup, we are all one family in Christ. We light the second candle to remind us that simply by saying ‘yes’, we are part of the family of God. Let us pray. Almighty Father, you are the giver of unexpected gifts. Thank you for the gift of continued hope in face of adversity. Help us to say ‘yes’ to you, and to know your loving presence in our lives. With the same love, we ask that you help us keep our hearts open to you. In the name of the ever-living Christ we pray, Amen. Scripture Reading: Matthew 1:18-25: Rev. Chelsey Hedglin Now the birth of Jesus the Messiah took place in this way. When his mother Mary had been engaged to Joseph, but before they lived together, she was found to be with child from the Holy Spirit. Her husband Joseph, being a righteous man and unwilling to expose her to public disgrace, planned to dismiss her quietly. But just when he had resolved to do this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife, for the child conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will bear a son, and you are to name him Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.” All this took place to fulfill what had been spoken by the Lord through the prophet: “Look, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall name him Emmanuel,” which means, “God is with us.” When Joseph awoke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him; he took her as his wife, but had no marital relations with her until she had borne a son; and he named him Jesus. Chelsey Hedglin Holy Communion Closing Hymn: Come, Thou Long-Expected Jesus Come, Thou Long-Expected Jesus Verse 1 Come, Thou long expected Jesus, born to set thy people free; from our fears and sins release us, let us find our rest in thee. Israel’s strength and consolation, hope of all the earth thou art; dear desire of every nation, joy of every longing heart. Verse 2 Born thy people to deliver, born a child and yet a King, born to reign in us forever, now thy gracious kingdom bring. By Thine own eternal spirit rule in all our hearts alone; by Thine all sufficient merit, raise us to thy glorious throne. Benediction: Rev.
