John Hill Scripture Reading: Matthew 3:13-17 and John 13:1-5: Rev. John Hill Then Jesus came from Galilee to John at the Jordan, to be baptized by him. John would have prevented him, saying, “I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?” But Jesus answered him, “Let it be so now; for it is proper for us in this way to fulfill all righteousness.” Then he consented. And when Jesus had been baptized, just as he came up from the water, suddenly the heavens were opened to him and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting on him. And a voice from heaven said, “This is my Son, the Beloved, with whom I am well pleased.” Now before the festival of the Passover, Jesus knew that his hour had come to depart from this world and go to the Father. Having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end. The devil had already put it into the heart of Judas son of Simon Iscariot to betray him. And during supper Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he had come from God and was going to God, got up from the table, took off his outer robe, and tied a towel around himself. Then he poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples’ feet and to wipe them with the towel that was tied around him. Sermon: The Character of Christ – Humility: Rev. John Hill Kyrie Words of Assurance Song: Lord Whose Love Through Humble Service Lord, Whose Love Through Humble Service Lord, whose love in humble service bore the weight of human need, who upon the cross, forsaken offered mercy’s perfect deed: we, your servants bring the worship not of voice alone, but heart, consecrating to Your purpose every gift that You impartStill Your children wander homeless; still the hungry cry for bread; still the captives long for freedom; still in grief we mourn our dead, As, O Lord, in deep compassion healed the sick and freed the soul, use the love your Spirit kindles still to save and make us whole. As we worship, grant us vision, till Your love’s revealing light in its height and depth and greatness dawns upon our quicken sight, making known the needs and burdens your compassion bids us bear, stirring us to tireless striving your abundant life to share.Called by worship to your service, forth in your dear name we go to the child, the youth, the aged, love in living deeds to show; hope and health, good will and comfort, counsel, aid, and peace we give, that you servants, Lord, in freedom may your mercy know, and live. Benediction: Rev. John Hill |
