Pastor’s Pen As I write this note on Monday evening, I am sitting in my house in Franklin for the last night. By the time you’re reading this, my kids and I should be moved into the parsonage. Let me first express my thanks for the welcome we’ve received thus far. Becca and James were super excited to see their names on the church sign, and we are grateful for the love and work that has been put into the parsonage prior to our arrival. We are looking forward to making it our home. All this tells me that Crievewood UMC is a church that pays attention to the value of Christian hospitality, and I’m excited to work together to continue to embody that value in our community and the world. Let me also introduce myself. My name is John Hill, and I’m the new pastor of Crievewood. I grew up in eastern Kentucky and have been in Middle Tennessee for 12 years. As I already mentioned, I have two children: Becca (6th grade) and James (2nd grade). I’m coming from Blakemore UMC on the west side of town, and I’m starting my fifteenth year as a pastor under appointment. I did a little longer introduction in my sermon during the service on Sunday if you haven’t listened to it yet. As you’ll discover, I tend to preach in sermon series rather than using the lectionary. This Sunday, we began a series called “My Peace I Give…” inspired by the words of Jesus from John’s Gospel that he spoke to his disciples before he was betrayed and killed. The disciples entered into a season of great upheaval and uncertainty, but Jesus’ promise to them was peace. During our own season of upheaval and uncertainty with the coronavirus, that promise of peace still stands. I know I have recently felt great turmoil and anxiety – both from the pandemic (especially with having two kids at home!) and from the transition in both my work and home. As I mentioned on Sunday, almost out of necessity I’ve taken up the practice of spending five minutes each day in silence to focus on God’s presence with me and to seek the promised peace of God. I’d like to invite you to join me in that practice this week: in the morning in the quiet of your home, during the day as you go for a walk, at night before you go to bed, whenever and wherever. If you do take up the practice, I’d love to hear what it was like for you. May we each know the peace of God despite and in the midst of the circumstances in which we find ourselves. Rev. John Hill A Letter from Steph Farewell Friends, It is hard to believe that I will no longer be on staff at the church that I have called home for almost ten years. Crievewood is the church where I began and completed the ordination process. I have so many fond memories of youth group, church retreats, mission trips to Mountain TOP, the Bahamas, and that one short trip to ASP where everyone but the Crievewood group got sick. As I transitioned to becoming the pastor at Glendale, Crievewood became a great source of support and encouragement for me. I can’t count the numbers of times I have called upon Pastor Peter or Joe Buffler for much needed help and I could not begin to list the people at Crievewood who have given me words of support and encouragement as we have built up the ministry at Glendale. Crievewood UMC really sets the example for what it means to support your pastors and I think if all churches were as supportive as Crievewood, we would have a lot more people go into (and stay) in the ministry. Much of the success and life we have seen at Glendale has been a result of the love that you all have poured into me. Going forth, I will no longer be your pastor, but I know I will continue to see many of you around the neighborhood and I am proud to be able to call you friends. I know that the church is in good hands with Rev. Chesley and Rev. John and I pray that Crievewod continues to be a blessing to this community and to the world. Steph Dodge (Warmth in Winter 2011, my first year at Crievewood UMC) Sharing Space with St. Mary of Bethany Beginning on July 1, Crievewood will begin a ministry partnership with St. Mary of Bethany Anglican Parish. Once our building is ready for in-person worship, they will be using our sanctuary space to hold their service each Sunday at 4:00 p.m. We look forward to additional opportunities for joint ministry with their congregation in spreading the love of Jesus throughout our city. Mark Hattan, Trustee Chair Planned re-opening date for in person worship is August 2nd. What you should know: Worship ExperienceThere will be no bulletins or hymnals. The screens will provide all information.Everyone will be required to wear masks inside the church except the worship service staff – because of the need for clear pronunciation and visible articulation to ensure the best sound. They will be confined to the chancel/altar area. There will be no passing of the offering plates – one will be placed at the back doors in the sanctuary for those who wish to place an offering, or people can donate online. There will be no physical passing of the peace.Communion will no longer be by intinction, but instead will be individual cups/bread.At the conclusion of the service, people will be dismissed by rows and encouraged to exit quickly to avoid crowding the narthex.Worship Services will continue to be live streamed.Ministry of HospitalityDoors: All doors will be propped open, with only the ushers handling them (weather permitting for exterior doors).Pews: Every other pew will be roped-off to ensure safe seating.Hand sanitizer: Dispensing stations will be in the narthex and at entrances.Potential illness: We will have a separate room for those who begin to cough or feel sick during worship.Entry/Exit: The two open doors for entrance/exit will be the upstairs main entrance and the downstairs ramp entrance.Cleaning/Sanitizing: Enhanced and more frequent cleaning of surfaces and space used each week.Sunday School: In-person classes in the building will remain on hold until further notice. This is, of course, a plan that is subject to change so please stay tuned. Our God Saves
Verse 1
In the name of the Father in the name of the Son!
In the name of the Spirit Lord we come!
We’re gather’d together to lift up Your name!
To call on our Savior to fall on Your grace!
Hear the joyful sound of our offering!
As Your saints bow down as Your people sing!
We will rise with You lifted on Your wings!
And the world will see that!
Chorus 1
Our God saves our God saves!
There is hope in Your name!
Mourning turns to songs of praise!

Your Peace Will Make Us One
Verse 1
Mine eyes have seen the glory
Of the coming of the Lord
You are speaking truth to power
You are laying down our swords
Replanting every vineyard
‘Til a brand new wine is poured
Your peace will make us one
Verse 2
I’ve seen you in our home fires
Burning with a quiet light
You are mothering and feeding
In the wee hours of the night
Your gentle love is patient
You will never fade or tire
Your peace will make us one
Chorus
Glory glory hallelujah
Glory glory hallelujah
Glory glory hallelujah
Your peace will make us one
Verse 3
In the beauty of the lilies
You were born across the sea
With a glory in your bosom
That is still transfiguring
Dismantling our empires
Till each one of us is free
Your peace will make us one
Repeat Chorus
It Is Well with My Soul

Pastor’s Pen Reclaiming Our Voices If you have not read or heard the letter written by the College of Bishops in our Jurisdiction, I encourage you to do so. A Pastoral Letter to United Methodists of the Southeastern Jurisdiction can be found by clicking on the Bishop’s Blog button at the end of this article. I appreciate the strong and humble witness of our Episcopal leaders, with particular gratitude for our own Bishop Bill McAlilly. We are living in a liminal moment regarding race relations in the United States, and their charge to us is profound and clear. Drawing upon the Baptismal Covenant and the Great Thanksgiving, the Bishops remind us that we have the language and the theology to challenge injustice, violence, and racism in every manifestation; public and private, individual and collective, extrinsic and systemic. Yet, they persist. The Bishops’ faithful call to action reminds me of the Prophet Micah’s response to the question “what does the Lord require?” To do, to love, to walk in order that justice, kindness, and keeping pace with God might shape our relationship with God and define our relationships with others, known and unknown. However, racism is a sin with a long half-life. The sheer pervasive and insidious nature of it is part of the challenge. Racism is so deeply woven into the fabric of our lives that it is easy to become acclimated to it, co-opting the voice of white people unaware and/or unconcerned by the threads of privilege, and muting the voice of people of color fearful and immobilized by the threads of discrimination. One takeaway for me from the letter by our Jurisdictional Bishops is the explicit action step of finding our voices. The horrific death of George Floyd exposed and mobilized. It ignited concern and courage. People of every race, culture, and creed are sensing a sacred moment out of which transforming, life giving change is possible. Speaking truth to power, peacefully protesting systems that perpetuate, even cultivate, racism. It has been helpful for me to reflect on the parable of the Pharisee and Tax Collector in the Gospel of Luke. When conversations about racism arise, there is a temptation for many white people to think of white folks shouting “Blood and Soil” in Charlottesville (2017) or Ku Klux Klan members burning crosses. That is a dangerous trap for it causes us to deflect the critical need to examine ourselves first. We become like the self-righteous man in the parable who prays, “God, I thank you that I am not like other people” (18:11). The first words generated by my reclaimed voice need to be as the tax collector, “God, be merciful to me a sinner” (18:13). To the Crievewood faith family: we must, individually, as a part of the body of Christ, as residents in the United States of America, prayerfully discern how to join our voices “in the holy work of dismantling racism in its subtle and overt forms” (quoting from the Bishops’ Pastoral Letter). To be sure it is a daunting call, but a much more beautiful tapestry of life and community awaits. One for which God, through Jesus Christ, has provided the pattern. One for which the Word became flesh. Peter van Eys |
