UMW Fundraiser On Sunday, November 22, 2020, the United Methodist Women will be offering a variety of cakes, pies, breads, brownies and cookies for sale to support their budget. The sale will commence after the worship service and will be located outside the front doors of the church. The women of UMW hope you will drop by and purchase some delicious treats to enjoy over your Thanksgiving week. Thank you for your support.Pastor’s Pen Hello, Crievewood! Just a few quick updates from me for the week:First, Happy Veterans Day! We are grateful for all those who have served in our armed forces and pray especially for those currently in active military duty.We had a successful Commitment Sunday this past weekend with many folks turning in their commitment cards for the coming year. If you have not yet done so, you can mail one to the church office, submit one electronically, or call the church office. Our knowing what you plan to give for the coming year helps us to budget accordingly. We are grateful for all that you give – your time, talents, and treasure.Stewardship Commitment FormWe are in the process of forming a Congregational Care Team with Mary Bryan as the leader. We’ll have more information coming out soon, but if you are feeling called to provide care and support to members of our congregation and want to serve on the team, please let me or Mary know.We will continue in our worship series called “Commit” for the next two Sundays. Weather permitting, we will be outside and online at 9:30 am. Chelsey will preach this coming Sunday on the topic of “Serve,” and I will preach the following week on “Live.”Our annual charge conference will be on November 22 at 4:00 on Zoom. All are welcome to attend.Thanksgiving is around the corner. I know that for many of us, this year’s celebration will look different than in the past. I pray we each can find ways to safely give thanks and connect with loved ones. The church office will be closed a few days the week of Thanksgiving, but you can always reach me or Chelsey on our cell phones if there is an emergency. The season of Advent begins on Sunday, November 29. Our theme will be “The Characters of Christmas.” It’s easy to overlook the characters in a story we know so well, but they have much to teach us. Join us for worship during Advent and Christmas as we take a closer look at each of the Characters of Christmas. Finally, I am feeling a sense of heaviness with all that is going on in the world: an extremely divisive election, COVID cases on the rise, racial tension in our nation, deaths and other pastoral concerns in our congregation, and the isolation of the pandemic combined with the time change and fewer hours of daylight. It feels like a lot to me, and I imagine to many of you as well. It’s all too easy to lose sight of what is good and to get trapped by despair. To combat this, I have a practice that I do each evening before bed. I reflect on my day and name 3 things for which I am grateful. That practice has given me hope, encouragement, and purpose during these hard times. If you are struggling, you might give it a try. You can write them down or simply name them and give thanks to God in prayer for them. It really has made a significant difference for me.Grace and peace, John HillCharge Conference If you still have forms to be submitted for Charge Conference, please finish them and return them to the church office as soon as possible. All safety guidelines should be followed whether inside or outside. Worship services are now livestreamed at 9:30 a.m. through Facebook Live for those who cannot worship in person. If for some reason you cannot worship at 9:30 a.m. during the livestreaming, the service will be recorded and posted on Facebook as soon as possible. Children ages 3 years old through second grade will have the option to attend Kids’ Worship on November 15 and November 22. Worship packets will be available for children in grade 3 to grade 6. Missions Advent Project SuppliesThank you for your generosity in providing supplies for the Advent baskets for our families with children. We have been blessed and have all that we need. Christmas Memorials Continuing in the Crievewood tradition, you will be able to honor a loved one this Christmas by donating a Christmas memorial. As in the past either a plant or monetary memorial can be made, and either way, all memorial donations will be acknowledged in the bulletin on Christmas Eve. Money received through the monetary memorials this year will be applied to the Crievewood Serves missions. Beginning Sunday, November 22, flower envelopes will be available in the narthex. The flower envelopes can be be filled out and used to order a plant memorial or to place a monetary memorial. At the top of the envelopes there is a line stamped “Plant Yes NO”. Please remember to circle which option you are selecting. If you are purchasing a memorial plant, the minimum donation is $12.50 per plant. Any amount of money may be given for a monetary memorial. Since the pandemic has prevented many members from comfortably entering the church building, you may also mail your gift to the church in your own envelope or donate online. If you are donating online, select the Miscellaneous option and write “Christmas Memorial” in the memo block. However, there may not be enough space to enter all the needed information electronically, so an email follow up containing the the name of the person that you wish to honor and the options you want may be necessary. Send that email tojanbassett@crievewoodumc.org. If you use your own envelope, please include a note with your name, the name of the person you wish to honor, whether the gift is a memorial or honorarium, and whether or not you want a plant, and write “Christmas Memorial” on the memo line of your check. Our Crievewood Youth and Kids grades 3-6th under the guidance of our seasoned adult volunteers will make bags of food for children at Norman Binkley Elementary School. The goal is to continue this mission throughout the school year. This is an important mission as the food items go directly to children in need. All items must fit in a gallon-sized Ziploc bag to be placed in a child’s backpack, so look for items that are individually portioned or small enough to fit into the bag. Please help us collect the following donations, and bring them to Crievewood whenever you are able: Canned fruits, vegetables, or beans Canned tuna fish Canned soups Boxes of rice, pasta, or mac n cheese Breakfast bars or protein bars Boxes of raisins, fruit cups, or applesauce Thank you for your support! Advent Bible Studies The Tuesday Bible Study is meeting in person, socially distanced and with masks on in the Builders/Hilltop classroom at 9:30 a.m. each Tuesday. They are currently exploring the book Short Stories by Jesus:The Enigmatic Parables of a Controversial Rabbi, but on November 24th the group will temporarily break away from that book and begin an Advent study using the book Christmas in the Four Gospels. Beginning on November 30th, Pastor John will lead a four week virtual Advent study on Monday nights at 6:30 p.m. which will discuss the same book. Watch for Zoom information in the next newsletter that will allow you to join that group. All are welcome to attend these sessions. We hope that each of you will consider participating in one of these Advent study groups as you prepare your heart for the coming of the Christ Child at Christmas. Lord God AlmightyHoly, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty! Early in the morning our song shall rise to thee; Holy, holy, holy! Merciful and mighty, God in three Persons, blessed Trinity! Holy, holy, holy! All the saints adore thee, casting down their golden crowns around the glassy sea; cherubim and seraphim falling down before thee, which wert, and art, and evermore shalt be. Holy, holy, holy! Though the darkness hide thee, though the eye of sinful man thy glory may not see, only Thou art holy; there is none beside thee, perfect in power, in love, and purity. Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty! All thy works shall praise thy name, in earth, and sky, and sea; Holy, holy, holy! Merciful and mighty, God in three Persons, blessed Trinity. Chelsey Hedglin What gain have the workers from their toil? I have seen the business that God has given to everyone to be busy with. He has made everything suitable for its time; moreover he has put a sense of past and future into their minds, yet they cannot find out what God has done from the beginning to the end. I know that there is nothing better for them than to be happy and enjoy themselves as long as they live; moreover, it is God’s gift that all should eat and drink and take pleasure in all their toil. I know that whatever God does endures forever; nothing can be added to it, nor anything taken from it; God has done this, so that all should stand in awe before him. That which is, already has been; that which is to be, already is; and God seeks out what has gone by. Sermon: Faith and Film Series – Captured by Wonder: Rev.
