I think we can all agree that this year has been different than previous years and not what we expected. As we begin the process of saying goodbye to 2020, my mind is already on 2021. Specifically, we are beginning the nominations process for leadership positions in the life of the church. My hope is to open up this process and invite broader participation from across the congregation. I have created a Servant Leadership Interest Form for anyone and everyone in the church to fill out. If you’re wondering whether or not we would want you to fill it out, the answer is a resounding YES! One of the images that Paul uses in the New Testament for the church is a body with many parts – and the body only functions well when each member is doing their part. I would love for you to take a few minutes to let us know how you might be willing to serve in the church during the next year to further God’s work and mission in the world. Many of the roles and positions are self-explanatory, but for some of those which aren’t, here are links to guides from the Kentucky Conferenceand the Iowa Conference that provide some additional information. If you have questions or want to discuss a role or position with me, please do reach out. When we all respond to God’s call to serve and offer our time, talents, and treasure, I believe God can do amazing things! Pastor John Servant Leadership Interest Form Missions AIM Mission to Mountain Top The annual CUMC adult fall mission trip to Mountain T.O.P. is scheduled this week, October 15-18. We have been blessed with a variety of funding sources, including $266,000 from the estates of several longtime, faithful members. Their gifts saved Crievewood substantial interest costs on a $500,000 loan that now is nearly paid off. Construction began in 2013 and was much-needed: new bathrooms upstairs and downstairs, a new air-conditioning system, an elevator, new flooring, an upstairs kitchen and janitor’s closet, and a covered drop-off and pick-up area for both child care and church use. We also lowered the ceiling in the upstairs hall, replaced the ceiling in fellowship hall, rewired the building according to codes, repaved the parking lot, and removed the old boiler system. We were fortunate to have more than $39,000 in our capital improvement fund at the outset, and we were able to move another $74,000 or so to capital improvement from other funds. We received $294,000 from the sale of the Manley property. An initial pledge drive generated $563,000, and a more recent campaign brought in $104,000. Moreover, we received $125,000 from members who did not pledge. Additionally, the Tennessee Conference allocated $47,000 to Crievewood when the properties of several closed churches were sold. In addition to the $1,450,000 construction cost, we have paid $84,000 in bank fees and interest through August and repaid $434,000 of our loan. As of September 30, we owed $66,000 on the bank loan. But we have $43,000 in the capital improvement fund and $4,500 in outstanding pledges (on top of the $667,000 already received). This puts the debt below $19,000, a very manageable level. Because interest continues to accrue, we have kept money in the capital fund until we were able to pay off the debt. The Finance Committee will be presenting a plan to eliminate the debt in a comfortable, orderly manner. The $2,000 a month we are now receiving from Saint Mary’s of Bethany Church, which is sharing our building, will be applied to the capital reserve fund to be used not only toward the debt, but for ongoing infrastructure costs. Given the age of our church and parsonage, increased maintenance costs are inevitable. While Crievewood will always have funding needs, expected and unexpected, it’s great to be almost debt-free, thanks to prayers, hard work, gifts, and bequests. We are always willing to answer any questions about this or any other budget matter. John Hill Immediately he made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead to the other side, while he dismissed the crowds. And after he had dismissed the crowds, he went up the mountain by himself to pray. When evening came, he was there alone, but by this time the boat, battered by the waves, was far from the land, for the wind was against them. And early in the morning he came walking toward them on the sea. But when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were terrified, saying, “It is a ghost!” And they cried out in fear. But immediately Jesus spoke to them and said, “Take heart, it is I; do not be afraid.” Peter answered him, “Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water.” He said, “Come.” So Peter got out of the boat, started walking on the water, and came toward Jesus. But when he noticed the strong wind, he became frightened, and beginning to sink, he cried out, “Lord, save me!” Jesus immediately reached out his hand and caught him, saying to him, “You of little faith, why did you doubt?” When they got into the boat, the wind ceased. And those in the boat worshiped him, saying, “Truly you are the Son of God.” Sermon: Faith and Film Series – Challenged by Our Call: Rev. Will you let my love be shown, will you let my name be known, will you let my life be grown in you and you in me? Will you leave yourself behind if I but call your name? Will you care for cruel and kind and never be the same? Will you risk the hostile stare should your life attract or scare? Will you let me answer prayer in you and you in me? Will you let the blinded see if I but call your name? Will you set the prisoners free and never be the same? Will you kiss the leper clean, and do such as this unseen, and admit to what I mean in you and you in me? Will you love the ‘you’ you hide if I but call your name? Will you quell the fear inside and never be the same? Will you use the faith you’ve found to reshape the world around, through my sight and touch and sound in you and you in me? Lord, your summons echoes true when you but call my name. Let me turn and follow you and never be the same. In your company I’ll go where your love and footsteps show. Thus I’ll move and live and grow in you and you in me. Benediction: Rev. Chelsey Hedglin |

John Hill Scripture Reading: Matthew 3:13-17 and John 13:1-5: Rev. John Hill Then Jesus came from Galilee to John at the Jordan, to be baptized by him. John would have prevented him, saying, “I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?” But Jesus answered him, “Let it be so now; for it is proper for us in this way to fulfill all righteousness.” Then he consented. And when Jesus had been baptized, just as he came up from the water, suddenly the heavens were opened to him and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting on him. And a voice from heaven said, “This is my Son, the Beloved, with whom I am well pleased.” Now before the festival of the Passover, Jesus knew that his hour had come to depart from this world and go to the Father. Having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end. The devil had already put it into the heart of Judas son of Simon Iscariot to betray him. And during supper Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he had come from God and was going to God, got up from the table, took off his outer robe, and tied a towel around himself. Then he poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples’ feet and to wipe them with the towel that was tied around him. Sermon: The Character of Christ – Humility: Rev. Meaningless!’ says the Teacher. ‘Utterly meaningless! Everything is meaningless!'” (Ecclesiastes 1:1-2, NIV) The Old Testament book of wisdom known as Ecclesiastes begins with the above words. The author – here called Teacher but in the original Hebrew known as Qoheleth – surveys his current situation and life and declares it “meaningless.” He goes on to wonder about the purpose of life and the meaning of it all as the sun rises and sets each day. I can hear in his voice a lament and an exasperated tone at the monotony of daily life and a longing for something more. As we have crossed the six-month mark of the pandemic (yes, you read that right), I have found myself in a similar headspace as Qoheleth. What are we doing? What’s the point of all this? Are things ever going to change? When will life get back to normal? What if things stay like this for six more months? Another year? Or two or three? I’m feeling sadness and anger around the loss of life and health and the way things have been handled on various levels. I don’t think I’ve reached the point of despair at the situation, but I’m certainly frustrated. In fact, I think the thing that I’m feeling most is boredom. I’m tired of being at home all the time. I wish I could see and interact with more people. I wish my kids could go to school. I wish I could go out to eat and explore new places. I wish I could travel. Instead, every day feels the same, and it’s getting old. One of the strange things about Ecclesiastes is that there’s no real resolution to the problems and questions that Qoheleth puts forward. There’s no magic answer or big reveal as to the purpose and meaning of life. It’s almost as if we’re each invited to work through the same struggles and find our own solutions and answers. That’s where I find myself – wrestling with all of this but without a clear resolution. If that’s where you are too, then you’re not alone. I don’t know the answers, but I do know that we are called to keep on keeping on, to struggle, and to have hope that there are brighter days ahead. As Ecclesiastes reminds us, we are all “in God’s hands” (Ecclesiastes 9:1). Rev. John HillJoin Pastor John for a six-week study using Amy-Jill Levine’s book Sermon on the Mount: A Beginner’s Guide to the Kingdom of Heaven starting on Wednesday, September 23, at 6:30 pm. While anyone can participate without the book, you are encouraged to purchase the book and read each chapter ahead of the session because it will greatly enhance your experience and learning. The study will be entirely virtual using Zoom. If you need help getting set up with Zoom, please contact the church office. Otherwise, you can click this link (https://zoom.us/j/97855570881) or use the Meeting ID: 978 5557 0881 in Zoom to attend. There will be a lobby for security purposes. Tuesday Bible Study It’s back! The group will gather in the Builders classroom on Tuesdays at 9:30 a.m. to discuss the book Stories Jesus Told: How to Read a Parable by Greg Carey. New Mission Opportunity – Pawster NashvilleHave you ever wondered how a pet becomes homeless? When pet owners are in crisis, they sometimes have no other choice but to surrender their pet. A new organization, Pawster Nashville, wants to give them a different choice. By providing foster care for cats and dogs, Pawster Nashville helps keep pets and their owners together through crisis. Pawster plans to foster 5 pets this fall before launching full operations in January, and we are asking the Crievewood UMC community to help. Whether you want to become a “Pawster Foster,” make an in-kind or financial contribution, or volunteer in another capacity, you can help end pet homelessness before it begins, and keep a family together through crisis. Learn more at pawsternashville.org. Generally, a distribution from an IRA, whether voluntary or a required minimum distribution (RMD), is taxable income. A QCD distribution is not taxable. A QCD is a direct payment to the church from your IRA custodian and can be made if you are 70½ or older. Up to $100,000 is permitted annually. The potential benefits of using a QCD distribution versus a regular distribution include reducing tax obligations, avoiding being pushed into a higher tax bracket, and reducing the impact of the Medicare surtax. It is important to remember that the QCD distribution must be made directly from the IRA to the church. The check can be mailed directly to the church, or it can be mailed to you and then you can deliver it to the church. But the custodian must make the check payable to Crievewood, not to you. We can provide the church’s taxpayer identification number if needed. The QCD is applicable to both traditional IRAs and Inherited traditional IRAs. Crievewood does not provide tax advice. We are providing information for you to consider and research. The church appreciates your gifts in whatever form they are made.Sept. 16 – Karen Hattan Sept. 19 – Lynne Hooper Sept. 20 – Ada Burch, Alan Fox, Terri Kannon, Carolyn Pemberton, and Dave Thurman Sept. 22 – Eleanor Jarratt Sept. 23 – Brittany Woodard Sept. 24 – Charlotte Swor Sept. 26 – Jamie Fuller and Rainey White Sept. 27 – Hailee Hunt-Hawkins, David Roos, and Brandon Swinney Sept. 28 – Buddy Abernathy and Steph Holland Sept. 29 – Annette Taylor Sept. 30 – Connor Lewis, David Sims, and Jose Luis Velazco If you have a birthday between September 16 and September 30 and it does not appear in the list above, then it is not in our database. We would like to celebrate with you. If your birthday does not appear, please notify the church office at 615-832-2897.Other Notes The UMW General Meeting scheduled on September 19 has been canceled because of COVID-19 virus precautions. Robert and Marjorie Foster, out of state members of Crievewood UMC, have six family cemetery plots at Woodlawn. They are now living in Huntsville, Alabama near their daughter and would like to sell those six plots. They are offering the plots for $3,000 or best offer, a much lower price than Woodlawn will give. If you are interested in purchasing these plots, please call Cynthia Doubet, their daughter, at (265) 520-6201. Because of the COVID-19 virus the Tennessee Annual Conference 2020 will be held virtually this year on September 18 and 19 with the theme By Faith. Members to Annual Conference should receive voting instruction and conference materials ahead of time, and they as well as congregation members can view the conference live-streamed. Consult the TN Conference website for more information. A button linking to the conference is at the end of the newsletter. If you know a Crievewood member who is not able to view Sunday services on Facebook, please call Kathryn Buffler at 615-598-5998. CD’s are made weekly and can be delivered so that all our members can at least hear the Sunday worship service. Still looking for more information? Below are links that may help.
