Thy Word
Thy Word is a lamp unto my feet
and a light unto my path.

When I feel afraid,
Think I’ve lost my way,
Still you’re there right beside me,
And nothing will I fear
as long as you are near.
Please be near me to the end.

Thy Word is a lamp unto my feet
and a light unto my path.

Now I will not forget
your love for me and yet
my heart forever is wandering.
Jesus, be my guide
And hold me to your side,
and I will love you to the end.

Thy Word is a lamp unto my feet
and a light unto my path.

 Opening Prayer:  Rev. Chelsey Hedglin

Scripture Reading: Daniel 5:5-12:  Rev. John Hill Immediately the fingers of a human hand appeared and began writing on the plaster of the wall of the royal palace, next to the lampstand. The king was watching the hand as it wrote. Then the king’s face turned pale, and his thoughts terrified him. His limbs gave way, and his knees knocked together. The king cried aloud to bring in the enchanters, the Chaldeans, and the diviners; and the king said to the wise men of Babylon, “Whoever can read this writing and tell me its interpretation shall be clothed in purple, have a chain of gold around his neck, and rank third in the kingdom.” Then all the king’s wise men came in, but they could not read the writing or tell the king the interpretation. Then King Belshazzar became greatly terrified and his face turned pale, and his lords were perplexed.The queen, when she heard the discussion of the king and his lords, came into the banqueting hall. The queen said, “O king, live forever! Do not let your thoughts terrify you or your face grow pale. There is a man in your kingdom who is endowed with a spirit of the holy gods. In the days of your father he was found to have enlightenment, understanding, and wisdom like the wisdom of the gods. Your father, King Nebuchadnezzar, made him chief of the magicians, enchanters, Chaldeans, and diviners, because an excellent spirit, knowledge, and understanding to interpret dreams, explain riddles, and solve problems were found in this Daniel, whom the king named Belteshazzar. Now let Daniel be called, and he will give the interpretation.”

Songs:  Take My Life, and Let It Be and By Faith

Take My Life, and Let It Be
Verse 1
Take my life, and let it be
Consecrated, Lord, to Thee;
Take my moments and my days,
Let them flow in ceaseless praise,
Take my hands, and let them move
At the impulse of Thy love;
Take my feet and let them be
Swift and beautiful for Thee,

Verse 2
Take my voice, and let me sing
Always, only, for my King;
Take my lips, and let them be
Filled with messages from Thee,
Take my silver and my gold;
Not a mite would I withhold;
Take my intellect, and use
Every power as Thou shalt choose,

Verse 3
Take my will, and make it Thine;
It shall be no longer mine.
Take my heart; it is Thine own;
It shall be Thy royal throne,
Take my love; my Lord, I pour
At Thy feet its treasure-store.
Take myself, and I will be
Ever, only, all for Thee,

By Faith
Verse 1
By faith we see the hand of God
In the light of Creation’s grand design
In the lives of those who prove God’s faithfulness
Who walk by faith and not by sight

Verse 2
By faith our fathers roamed the earth
With the power of God’s promise in their hearts
Of a holy city built by God’s own hand
A place where peace and justice reign

Chorus
We will stand as children of the promise
We will fix our eyes on God our soul’s reward
Till the race is finished and the work is done
We’ll walk by faith and not by sight

Verse 3
By faith the prophets saw a day
When the longed-for Messiah would appear
With the power to break the chains of sin and death
And rise triumphant from the grave

Verse 4
By faith the church was called to go
In the power of the Spirit to the lost
To deliver captives and to preach good news
In every corner of the earth

Chorus

Verse 5
By faith the mountain shall be moved
And the power of the gospel shall prevail
For we know in Christ all things are possible
For all who call upon His name

Chorus
 Opening Prayer:  Rev. John Hill

Scripture Reading: Daniel 3:19-23:  Rev. Chelsey Hedglin

Then Nebuchadnezzar was so filled with rage against Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego that his face was distorted. He ordered the furnace heated up seven times more than was customary, and ordered some of the strongest guards in his army to bind Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego and to throw them into the furnace of blazing fire. So the men were bound, still wearing their tunics, their trousers, their hats, and their other garments, and they were thrown into the furnace of blazing fire. Because the king’s command was urgent and the furnace was so overheated, the raging flames killed the men who lifted Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. But the three men, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, fell down, bound, into the furnace of blazing fire.

 Jesus Draw Me Ever NearerVerse 1
Jesus draw me ever nearer
As I labour through the storm
You have called me to this passage
And I’ll follow though I’m worn

Chorus
May this journey bring a blessing
May I rise on wings of faith
And at the end of my heart’s testing
With Your likeness let me wake

Verse 2
Jesus guide me through the tempest
Keep my spirit staid and sure
When the midnight meets the morning
Let me love You even more

Form within me as I go
And at the end of this long passage
Let me leave them at Your throne

Song: Take Time to Be HolyTake Time to Be Holy
Verse 1Take time to be holy, speak oft with thy Lord;
Abide in Him always, and feed on His Word.
Make friends of God’s children, help those who are weak,
Forgetting in nothing His blessing to seek.

Verse 2Take time to be holy, the world rushes on;
Spend much time in secret, with Jesus alone.
By looking to Jesus, like Him thou shalt be;
Thy friends in thy conduct His likeness shall see.

Verse 3Take time to be holy, let Him be thy Guide;
And run not before Him, whatever betide.
In joy or in sorrow, still follow the Lord,
And, looking to Jesus, still trust in His Word.

Verse 4Take time to be holy, be calm in thy soul,
Each thought and each motive beneath His control.
Thus led by His Spirit to fountains of love,
Thou soon shalt be fitted for service above.

Scholarship Selection CommitteePastor’s Pen

 When I was a child I was a little shy and pretty afraid to try new things. I think I was afraid to get things wrong or not to do them well, and that fear prevented me from doing certain activities. I’ve always liked to be able to master a task or skill – anything from a video game to school work to knowing each channel number on our cable package as a kid (Channel 33 was USA Network, in case you were wondering). If I didn’t already know how to do something, I often would avoid it. While I’ve overcome the shyness and the reticence around new experiences, I still like to get things right (Classic One on the Enneagram as I mentioned in Sunday’s sermon).

One of the things about life and ministry during this time of a global pandemic is that no one really knows what the right thing to do is. Do we restart in-person worship soon or hold off until a later date? What are the chances that someone could get sick? Do we limit the number of people who can attend? What precautions do we need to take? What are the financial implications of waiting longer? What are the risks of not waiting long enough? Who even gets to make the decision? To what voices and data do we pay attention? Do we restart if only some of the congregation can attend or wait until everyone can? Do we have one service, or two, or more? There are no clear answers, and opinions will vary from person to person on these and other questions.

The Administrative Council met – socially distanced with masks in the Sanctuary and via Zoom – on Sunday afternoon with these questions as the backdrop. The Council voted unanimously to have Chelsea and me appoint an ad hoc committee to think through these questions. We will gather this task force in the coming days to begin our work of discernment about when to restart in-person worship and how best to do so. The group will reflect a broad spectrum of demographics from the congregation and have representation from the medical community, the Trustees, the worship committee, and more. Before I arrived, the Administrative Council had hoped to restart in-person worship on the first Sunday of August, but we will continue to worship virtually until this working group recommends otherwise. I know that I feel a lot of pressure and desire to have a firm date when we can gather in the Sanctuary again, but I think it is best to allow other things to guide us than the calendar.

I don’t know what the right answer is to when we should restart in-person worship. I don’t think anyone does. Maybe there isn’t even such a thing as a right answer to that question. But I’m grateful for people who are willing to wrestle with the question and look at it from different angles and perspectives. I trust that as we do that, God’s Spirit will guide us and together we’ll settle on something that seems best to our spirits. In the meantime, thank you for your patience. I long to be able to worship with you in person and meet many of you for the first time. Until then, see you on Facebook Live!

Appreciating Crievewood
 We want to thank the congregation for the love and care we have received over the past ten years, and the joy of living in the parsonage.  Both of us were raised and nurtured in faith communities, and cherish deeply the power of relationships in the body of Christ.  You are a gift.

We also want to offer thanksgiving to God for your witness to faith lived in word and deed. Beyond the privilege of serving God together, we have grown spiritually by your example.  You are a blessing.

And, we are grateful for the wonderful “drive-by good-bye”, the generous farewell gift, the many cards and letters, and the gracious DVD compilation that affirmed us in this transition.   You are an instrument of God’s grace.

With Crievewood UMC, we have shared life in such a sublime and meaningful context, we claim and trust the promise that even as the relationship has changed the bond in Christ is eternal.

The two of us are settling into our new home, so far retirement (for Peter) looks like unpacking boxes, serving as Patti’s personal attaché, and substitute preaching at two rural congregations in Dickson County.  We’ll get the hang of it eventually!

Much love,
Patti and Peter
Washable masks are sewn by Bu Bu, a refugee from Burma who is an active member of the Golden Triangle Fellowship of Belmont UMC.  The masks come in assorted colors and are for sale for $5.00 each.  If you want to help Bu Bu by purchasing one or more masks, please contact Bill Lovell at (615) 310-7536.

Bill Lovell is a former pastor of Crievewood UMC, and he has a small supply of these masks to sell for Bu Bu.  Thanks for your consideration.Other Notes

Crievewood has begun a ministry partnership with St. Mary of Bethany Anglican Parish. Once our building is ready for in-person worship, they will be using our sanctuary space to hold their service each Sunday at 4:00 pm.  We look forward to additional opportunities for joint ministry with their congregation in spreading the love of Jesus throughout our city. Still looking for more information?  Below are links that may help.

Beyond My Understanding
Verse 1
In the depth of all my pain
I long to hear Your voice
To know that blest assurance
For the freedom to rejoice
I want to know Your purpose
I want to comprehend Your plan
To know the peace that passes
What I will never understand

Chorus
Beyond my understanding
Beyond the scope of what I see
Lies the promise for the claiming
Of God’s peace that’s meant for me
Like a cool refreshing fountain
Like the calm of a silent sea
Beyond my understanding
God’s peace waits for me

Verse 2
Lord I give You all my failures
And I give You all my loss
I take the pain within me
And I lay it at Your cross
I will not pick it up again
I leave it all behind
I’ll learn to trust and to obey
And to claim Your peace as mine

Repeat Chorus

where your love is our banner song
lead us God on our journey home

Vs. 2:
Lead us God in the desert
by your holy light
with your cloud through the day
and your fire by night
where we’ll carry each other
o’er the trials of life
lead us God by your holy light

Repeat Refrain

Vs. 3
Lead us God to the river
that will wash us clean
where your Spirit will fill us
and set us free
where we’re bound with each other
in that flowing stream
lead us God to your river deep

Repeat Refrain
